Rain cancels UA matches at Ragin' Cajun tourney

Published: Monday, September 22, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

On the second day of tournament play at the Ragin'Cajun Courts, Arkansas Razorbacks Dmitr y Lebedev and Matt Walters lost tough singles matches while the rain conquered the doubles and consolation singles tournaments which were eventually cancelled.

Playing in what Razorback coach Robert Cox called a " very good match, " Lebedev fell 7-5, 6-4 to John Tragardh of LSU on Saturday morning.

" Dimitry's serve just let him down but he showed some good tennis and that's what we want to gain from the fall events, " said Cox.

Freshman Matt Walters also completed his match against Louisiana-Lafayette's Javier Pulgar Garcia, losing 6-1, 6-0. Although strong at times, Walters was never able to gain enough control to climb back into the match.

" He showed some pretty good tennis at times, " said Cox. " It just wasn't enough to really compete for the victory. "

The highlight of the Razorbacks day was cut short, as the doubles team of Lebedev and Tyler Tarnasky was leading Memphis's Leon Nasemann and Charlie Ramsey, 6-2, before play was called and the doubles tournament cancelled in the late afternoon.

With the cancellation of the consolation singles tournament, the Hog trio of Lebedev, Walters and Tarnasky will head home Sunday and begin work to improve their serving, something each struggled with in their respective matches.

" We didn't serve well this tournament, " said Cox. " That's what fall events are for, to point out the weakness we have now so we can improve and get ready for a solid spring. "
