SEC honors Washington as Player of the Week

Not only did Michael Washington’s career night stand above his fellow Razorbacks, it stood above everyone in the Southeastern Conference.

The SEC Office in Birmingham, Ala. announced Monday that junior forward Washington was named the the SEC’s Player of the Week for leading the basketball Razorbacks to a 91-87 overtime season-opening victory over Southeast Louisiana last Friday night at Walton Arena.

Washington, a native of McGehee, tallied a careerhigh 30 points and 14 rebounds double-double, shattering his previous doubledouble best 17 points / 12 boards.

He scored 7 points in the overtime including 5 free throws and a dunk.

Washington’s 30 points was the most by a Razorback in a season-opener since Sidney Moncrief tallied 30 when the 1978-79 Razorbacks opened, 80-74 over Oklahoma.

This week, Washington leads the Razorbacks into nonconference games Thursday night against California-Davis in Walton Arena and Saturday night at Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. Single-game tickets

on sale Razorback men’s basketball single-game tickets are now available to be purchased for the 2008-09 season. Arkansas is 1-0 this season following Friday’s 91-87 overtime victory over Southeastern Louisiana. Pre-sea- son All-Southeastern Conference forward Michael Washington had career highs of 30 points and 14 rebounds.

John Pelphrey is in his second season as head coach of the Razorbacks. Arkansas is coming off its 30 thNCAA Tournament berth and three straight 20-win seasons. The 2008 Hogs finished 23-12, reached the finals of the SEC Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Last year’s team also went 15-1 in Bud Walton Arena in front of an average crowd attendance of 17, 148, which ranked eight-best in the nation.

This year’s home schedule includes dates against Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee and 14 other opponents. The next home game is on Thursday when Arkansas plays host to California-Davis in a 7: 05 p. m. tilt.
