Play the hand that is dealt. I see this as a good thing where the integrity of the team - the make up of the team isn't likely to be compromised by someone 'outside' the program. As others have offered, he knows the system and he knows the players. I would expect that he'll give great leverage to his coordinators.
Seems as if hiring from 'within' on the staff would have been more difficult - where Long would have to choose one over others. This leaves the assistants to continue their work and maturation moving toward head coaching opportunities.
No doubt the Smith's coaching legacy is less than exciting. A 10 month contract takes him to just past the BCS and bowl windows. Expect we'll see a recompete for the job then and if He's done well then he deserves more opportunity. If we underachieve, expect he'll take that blame.
Given our schedule and talent, Smith needs to win 10-12 games. Anything else means, well, "...hello... Weber State .. uh ... remember me.. ". :-)
Don't know what he'll say, but Mr Long is the one charged with doing what in his view is the right thing. I, for one, support him - whichever call he makes. Monday morning quarterbacking will serve no purpose. Join me in backing the same administration (Mr Long) that chose to bring Mr Petrino in - he was right then - against odds and peer pressure. Its time we trust him again with the integrity and future of Arkansas Athletics.
You known what? Life goes on. With or without Mr Petrino (in deference to his suspension, I'll withhold the title of 'Coach' in this post), this program will rise. It will rise because Mr Long and the University will do the right thing for the University, for the players, and for the fans. Coaches come and go - many go because of their own actions. If that is the case here, then we move forward and not look back as that has NO useful purpose.
Coach Johnson - please lead your team out on to the field and get them ready to play.
There isn't ONE of us in this discusssion room that hasn't bent the truth (you call it what you want, lying, dishonesty, omitting details, whatever) in a time of crisis. Its human nature. Part of the embedded 'flight or fight" chemistry that is embedded in our DNA. Some manage it better than others but we ALL have it.
Petrino is just that (human) although many wish to position him higher in the food chain. If everyone of us - yes ... the collective 'us' - were 'fired' for such response under pressure, our unemployment rate would be oh so much higher.
Judge not - lest you be judged. That's actually pretty good advice.
But then sadly, the truth is, without such living soap operas, so many would have only their OWN lives to judge. And what's the fun in that.
Got to make this lineup work with the lack of power and bats. The pitching staff will will 35 games but the lack of hitting against equally strong pitching teams will catch up with us (ref: LSU series).
Is this really a news story? Did BJ actually even consider applying for the draft? Did he actually have aspirations that he's one of the top 50 players available for the draft? There may be 50 others players in the SEC I'm not sure BJ would go before in the draft.
oh - and of course we don't get him on the hogball court until the start of SEC play in Jan. Is that really a good deal? He joins in January and gets his hogball legs in February. hmmm...
anyone know his run numbers? Tall but only 195 suggests a bit of a thin frame. Good as a wide receiver, but I see where he'll play basketball so no Oliver or Williamson here. Can't have it both ways though as he needs the weight to stay down in football but lord knows we need more physical presence in the paint on the hogball court.
Heisman listing 2 Hogs
The only thing that "DM" said that was useful was "...nuff said."
DM - can we hold you to that?

CoverItLive: Bobby Petrino Decision
given what was described in Mr Long's statement, there was no choice. Move on Hogs. Close ranks and move on.
(p.s. Yoo Hoo... Garrett. Have you turned on cable down there in Alabama yet? :-))
