Petrino suspended following crash revelations

dwp007 is right. The most damaging aspect of this story with regards to Coach's job status, in my opinion, is that another UA employee was involved. That could possibly open the UA up to legal issues or civil lawsuits. If AD Long concludes that he must fire Petrino, I think it will hinge on that fact. As for the affair, it's an unrelated matter, unless it draws the UA into it by virtue of involving a subordinate (which it might, but that fact hasn't been established by known statements so far). I think AD Long will make the right decision for the UA - we just have to let him complete his inquiry into this. I've seen even pastors survive both personally and professionally from infidelity, but it doesn't happen often.

Petrino in stable condition following motorcycle accident

MSH, get over yourself.

Get well, soon, Coach. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Robinson won't return to Arkansas

I have wanted this move to be made since the end of last year, but I do hope Willy has success wherever he lands. The stage is set for a really top-notch DC to come in here and take us to the next level. The two best defenses in college football are playing for the national championship, and would've played for the SEC championship if that had been possible. If we can develop a defense like that, that's where we'll be, too. Our offense will continue to be strong and improve, and I have high hopes that our defense will soon be at the same level.

Nutt to resign at end of year

jordan, you're right about the sneaky part. There were definitely some serious problems with Nutt's tenure, but there were some good things, too. It just seems to me that when we Arkansas fans continue to bash Nutt and revel in his misery, it makes him more important to us than he should be. Ignoring him would probably hurt his pride more than anything.

Nutt to resign at end of year

In all honesty, I wish Houston Nutt the best. He did some nice things at Arkansas - 3 times winning or tying for the SEC West title, 2 SEC championship game appearances. Granted, he did that with a Western Division that was weaker than it is now. We are infinitely better off with Bobby Petrino as our coach, but we do need to acknowledge Nutt's accomplishments at Arkansas. I think Nutt would have a fine career at a mid-major school, where a predominantly running attack wins more games than at the D-1 level. Nutt just isn't a very good D-1 coach, but hopefully he has success at a lower level.

Wade apologizes for hit

In this situation, I don't think you can go with what you saw in "real time." It takes careful examination of the replay to see everything involved. The returner clearly was having trouble locating the ball, and he badly misplayed his attempt to catch the ball, as evidenced by the fact that the ball landed 5 yards in front of him. Had Wade not been there, I think the ball still would have hit the ground and possibly hit a SC player for a turnover. Wade thought he had timed his hit to arrive just after the ball did. Remember, there is no "halo rule" anymore. The hit was still a penalty, but the ejection was caused by emotion from the crowd and Vandy coaches.

Arkansas does enough to avoid calamity

I believe in Petrino. In order to keep that belief, I have to believe that he is saying the positive things in public so as not to create a media frenzy. I hope that behind closed doors he is telling Robinson that his job is on the line if he doesn't start producing better results.

HogAuthority, what do you mean by the best year since 1992? Is it the ranking? If you mean our record, I think you're off a little on your stats. We were 3-7-1 in 1992. We were 6-1 at this point in 2006, and we were 7-0 at this point in 1998.

Ohio St. vacates its 2010 victories

This is why I didn't want the cheating 5 plus coach to participate in the Sugar Bowl. Yeah, we didn't want them to have any excuses, but I only want to play with and against ELIGIBLE players and coaches. The bowl officials talked so much about the "integrity of the game," but what happened was a team with absolutely no integrity participated while a team that plays by the rules suffered an unfair disadvantage. The NCAA has shown that it treats its member schools differently by showing favoritism to certain schools. Georgia had a player suspended immediately for selling a jersey while OSU got to defer punishment for its cheaters and Auburn was allowed to let a player that the NCAA itself deemed ineligible continue playing. Arkansas State and North Dakota were made to change their mascots while Florida State was allowed to keep its mascot (making any school change its mascot is ridiculous anyway). I can't think of any words that can adequately express how corrupt the NCAA is.

Tressel resigns amid NCAA investigation

Well, the decision to let the "cheating 5" (plus one in Tressel) play in the Sugar Bowl comes back to be a huge black eye on the NCAA public perception (as if they had any credibility at all). As is usually the case, more damaging information came out on this story AFTER the initial "punishment" was handed down. I doubt that even the corrupt NCAA could have let the players and Tressel participate in the Sugar Bowl if these facts had been public knowledge. The same thing will play out in the Auburn situation.

So, Troy Smith was suspended for two games, including a bowl game, for the same thing these 5 players did, yet the "cheating 5" were allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl. Sounds to me like the school knew more than they let on and were trying to at least scam a bowl win before the hammer fell from the NCAA. With the list of violations outlined in this story, and with Tressel and possibly OSU administrators withholding information from the NCAA, I would hope the punishment would be very severe for this "repeat offender" school.

What they’re saying about Ryan Mallett

wesman, I hope you didn't think I was accusing you of not giving facts about the allegations. I was agreeing with you. I was talking about the reporters on TV. I never saw them back up any of the talk with proof. In fact, I saw one reporter actively dodge the whole subject of proof. On his height, I was simply mentioning a story that ESPN The Magazine ran that said in 90 seasons, only 13 quarterbacks taller than 6'5" have ever played a single down. According to a wiki website (which I am always skeptical of), three QBs in 2009 were at least 6'6": Derek Anderson, Joe Flacco, and Jamarcus Russell. The site also mentioned previous QBs John Navarre and Dan McGwire. Only Flacco has shown promise of that group. Personally, I think it's a meaningless statistic because there are simply not very many QBs that tall, but you know how NFL execs love to pay attention to statistics, so it wouldn't surprise me to learn that some teams backed off of Mallett in part because of his height. Stupid, yes, but that's what goes into some of the dumbest decisions NFL execs make.
