Pitcher Duke Welker (Arkansas Razorbacks) was recalled to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Welker, 27, was 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA and 4 saves in 25 appearances at Class AAA Indianapolis. The right-hander was called up because of the Pirates’ depleted bullpen. Pittsburgh had to use three relievers in Tuesday’s 4-0 victory at Cincinnati and four in a 2-1, 13-inning loss Wednesday. Welker was the third former Razorback pitcher to earn a call-up to the major leagues this season.
Pitcher Nick Schmidt (Arkansas Razorbacks) earned his first save at Class AAA Colorado Springs on Tuesday in a 4-1 victory over Tacoma. Schmidt relieved Chris Volstad and pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed 2 hits, walked one and didn’t strike out a batter. Schmidt was the sixth Colorado Springs pitcher to earn a save this season.
