Thurman working to get 2018 guard to visit

— Arkansas assistant coach Scotty Thurman is trying to get Minnesota junior guard Gabe Kalscheur down to Fayetteville this fall.

“I’ve been talking to him quite a bit,” Kalscheur said. “He’s just trying to get to know me and my family. He’s been reaching out to me and my family. He wants me to go down there and watch a football game coming up in the fall.”

Kalschuer, 6-4, 190 pounds of Minneapolis De La Salle High School has scholarship offers from Minnesota, North Dakota and Northern Iowa while drawing interest from Arkansas and others. Thurman was on hand to watch

He plans to take Thurman up on the invite to visit.

“I have an uncle that lives down there,” Kalschuer said. “He likes Arkansas a lot.”

Kalschuer, who scored 27 points to help De La Salle win the 3A State Championship game, plays for Howard Pulley in the Nike EYBL and averages 7.9 points and 3 rebounds while shooting 34 percent from beyond the three-point line.

Thurman was on hand to watch Kalschuer and Howard Pulley defeat Mean Streets of Illinois 72-67 Wednesday evening in the Las Vegas Classic. .

“If they crowd my outside shot, I’ll take it to the hole and get to the bucket,” he said. “I feed off defense. My defense fuels my offense.”

Arkansas’ style of play fits Kalschuer’s game.

“I like that a lot,” he said.

Kalschuer reminds Thurman of himself.

“He said I played like him,” Kalschuer said. “I play like how he use to play.”
