Funeral held for Watkins, member of '64 title team

A funeral service was held in Little Rock on Thursday for Larry Watkins, a member of the 1964 national championship team at Arkansas.

Watkins died Monday at the age of 72. He had spent the past 42 years practicing medicine in Little Rock.

Watkins was an All-American running back at Hamburg High School before playing on offense and defense for the Razorbacks in 1964, '65 and '67. He also was a standout on the Razorbacks' undefeated freshman team that won the Southwest Conference championship in 1963.

Watkins was a reserve in 1964 when he recorded 15 tackles, two pass breakups and an interception. He famously held a sign that read "Arkansas 1964 National Champions 12-0" in the team photo following the Razorbacks' win over Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl.

After sitting out the 1966 season, Watkins was a team captain in 1967 and rushed for one touchdown in his senior season.
