Arkansas beats ULM, 10-9, in 10 innings

Arkansas 10, Louisiana-Monroe 9 - Final

Arkansas survived four errors to rally past Louisiana-Monroe with two runs in the 10th inning for a 10-9 victory Tuesday night at Baum Stadium. Casey Martin scored the game winner, racing home from third on a wild throw to the plate by the shortstop.

The Razorbacks tied the game when Heston Kjerstad singled to score Eric Cole, who reached on a leadoff hit to the infield. Cole advanced to second on a groundball by Martin, but ULM second baseman Brian Barefoot never touched the bag at second, allowing both runners on with no outs.

Dominic Fletcher was hit by a pitch to bring Jordan McFarland to the plate. McFarland hit a hard grounder on a 2-2 pitch, and the shortstop's throw went past the catcher, allowing Martin to slide home safely.

Arkansas outhit ULM 12-7. The Razorbacks' four errors bring their season total to 35 through 29 games.

Louisiana-Monroe 9, Arkansas 9, after 9.5 innings

Braedon Barrett reached on a walk to open the 10th. Barrett advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Evan Lee relieved and had a soft liner off his glove for an infield single. Barrett moved to third. Johnny DeLaCruz put down a suicide bunt to score Barrett. Lee went home but there wasn't a play and DeLaCruz reached on a fielder's choice.

Eric Cole beat out a grounder into the hole at shortstop. Casey Martin's bouncer was fielded by the pitcher, but the second baseman was not on the base for the throw to second. Both runners were safe. Heston Kjerstad's single through the left side plated Cole to tie the game. The left fielder's throw bounced to the cutoff fielder, never reaching the plate. Fletcher was trying to bunt, but hit in the wrist to load the bases with no outs. With the infield in, Jordan McFarland's grounder was fielded by shortstop Joey Jordan and thrown past the catcher trying to force Martin at the plate.

Arkansas 8, ULM 8, after 9 innings

Reliever Kole Ramage gave up four runs in the ninth. Peyton Lacoste hit a three-run homer after pinch-hitter Will Daniels hit a liner that Heston Kjerstad dropped in left to score a run. Ramage got a lead-off ground out then had Johnny DeLaCruz on strikes, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach. After a walk, Kjerstad had a bead on a liner going back to the wall but it came out of his glove. Lacoste's drive was deep into the Hog Pen.

Carson Shaddy singled to left, then was bunted to second by Casey Opitz on a sacrifice. Pinch-hitter Jax Biggers popped to shortstop. Shaddy moved to third on a wild pitch. Evan Lee bounced out to first to end the ninth.

Arkansas 8, ULM 4, after 8 innings

The Warhawks got a two-out walk from Braedon Barrett, but Barrett Loeske fanned Spencer Hemphill to end the top of the seventh. Loeske struck out the side and has five in two innings.

ULM reliever Cole Trichel walked Casey Martin and Heston Kjerstad followed with a single to center. Martin went to third on the hit. Dominic Fletcher lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Martin.

Arkansas 7, ULM 4, after 7 innings

Barrett Loeske relieved to open the seventh after Jake Reindl's best stint of the season. Reindl gave up three hits, but no runs in three innings of scoreless relief. After a lead-off strike out, Johnny DeLaCruz was beaned on a breaker, then went to second on a wild pitch. Turner Francis walked. Chad Bell fanned and Peyton Lacaste was the third out on a soft liner to second.

The Hogs manufactured a run in the seventh. Jordan McFarland, taking over for Jared Gates, beat out an infield hit. With McFarland running, Casey Opitz hit a liner into the vacant hole at shortstop for a hit-and-run single. McFarland raced to third and scored on Jack Kenley's squeeze bunt to the pitcher. Trey Jeans relieved for the Warhawks. Evan Lee was called out on strikes.

Attendance on the bitter cold night was 1,689. It was 43 degrees in the seventh inning.

Arkansas 6, ULM 4, after 6 innings

Chad Bell, Evian Benjamin and Pierce Khan singled to load the bases with one out, but the Warhawks did not score. Braedon Barrett struck out looking and pinch-hitter Cade Harper bounced out to Carson Shaddy to end the threat.

The Razorbacks grabbed the lead on Evan Lee's three-run homer into the ULM bullpen in right. His liner followed a hit by pitch to Carson Shaddy and Jack Kenley's walk. After Eric Cole walked, the Warhawks went to the bullpen for right-hander Miles Dunn. Heston Kjerstad singled to stretch his hitting streak to 13 games. Luke Bonfield fanned to end the frame.

ULM 4, Arkansas 3, after 5 innings

The Warhawks went 1-2-3 in the fifth. Jake Reindl got a strikeout and two ground outs.

Arkansas scored one run without benefit of a hit. Eric Cole reached when third baseman Peyton Lacoste dropped a towering pop up for an error. Casey Martin walked. Heston Kjerstad reached on a fielder's choice bouncer to second. Martin was forced at second. Bonfield bounced deep in the hole for an RBI fielder's choice. Kjerstad was out at second with Cole scoring.

ULM 4, Arkansas 2, after 4 innings

Jake Reindl, last on the roster with a 6.92 ERA to enter the game, relieved for Arkansas to start the fourth. He retired the Warhawks in order, the first time on the night.

Carson Shaddy bounced a two-out single past the shortstop. Casey Opitz and Jack Kenley both walked to load the bases. That ended the night for starter Stephen Morrison. Right-hander Cole Gray relieved. Evan Lee hit a liner to deep center -- exactly where he was played -- for the third out.

ULM 4, Arkansas 2, after 3 innings

Chad Bell slammed a two-out, solo homer into the UA bullpen to extend the ULM lead to 4-2. It was an opposite field shot and probably kept fair by the wind blowing across the field. Shortstop Jack Kenley booted a grounder at short for the third error of the game for the Razorbacks.

The Hogs appeared to lose a run on an umpire's call with two outs in the bottom of the third. Heston Kjerstad stroked a long blast over the right field wall, that seemed to curve around the foul pole. It was immediately ruled foul by first base umpire Jason Blackburn. Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn asked for a replay review. After checking, the foul call was upheld. Kjerstad popped out to right on the next pitch. The inning started with a great defensive play by ULM first baseman Bell, diving to snare a one-hop shot by Eric Cole.

ULM 3, Arkansas 2, after 2 innings

Jackson Rutledge gave up a three-run homer in the second. He walked Peyton Lacoste, then third baseman Casey Martin mishandled a sacrifice bunt attempt for an error, the second of the game for the Hogs. Braedon Barrett launched a line drive over the fence in right. It was a hard shot, but got a boost from a brisk north breeze.

The Hogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Luke Bonfield doubled inside the bag at third. Jared Gates drove Bonfield home with a sharp single to the gap in left center. Carson Shaddy was hit by a pitch. Gates took advantage of an early break to the plate by the third baseman when Casey Optiz squared to bunt. Gates trotted to third with the ball still in the pitcher's hand. Optiz drove home Gates on a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left.

Arkansas 0, ULM 0, after 1 inning

Both teams stranded a runner in the first. Carson Shaddy committed an error to allow an ULM runner with two outs.

Evan Lee opened the Arkansas first with a clean single to center. He was erased on Eric Cole's double play grounder to first. Casey Martin walked, but Heston Kjerstad popped out to the shortstop.

Pregame

The Razorbacks and Warhawks are scheduled to begin at 6:35 p.m.

Jackson Rutledge will take the mound for Arkansas in his first career start. Rutledge has not allowed an earned run in 9 2/3 innings this season. He has pitched in eight games.

ULM (15-12) will counter with right-hander Stephen Morrison, who is 2-0 with a 3.77 ERA.

Arkansas is going to give several everyday backups a chance to start tonight. Among them are Evan Lee at designated hitter, Jared Gates at first base, Casey Optiz at catcher and Jack Kenley at shortstop. Luke Bonfield, who is typically the DH, will play in left field and Heston Kjerstad will move to right field.

The weather is going to be cold and getting colder throughout the game. The temperature at game time should be in the mid 40s and could be near freezing by the end of the game. The north winds could gust up to 30 mph, which might create for some wind-aided home runs, especially to right field.
