The Recruiting Guy

Musselman assistant hire has NBA background

Arkansas basketball coach Eric Musselman talks about his new team during the State of the Hog event on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.

Arkansas coach Eric Musselman’s first assistant coach hire also has an NBA background that could aid in recruiting.

Corey Williams, most recently the head coach at Stetson, has been named to Musselman’s staff. He was a second-round draft pick of the Chicago Bulls in 1992 and part of the Bulls' 1993 NBA championship team.

He also had a short stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Prior to the NBA, Williams played point guard for Oklahoma State and helped lead the Cowboys to the Sweet 16 in 1991 and 1992.

He was the chief recruiter for Oral Roberts and Oklahoma State before joining Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Florida State. Hamilton praised Williams in an interview about his hiring as Stetson's head coach.

"He is a tremendous person who has worked hard and prepared himself throughout his career to be a head coach," Hamilton said. "He has been an integral part of our success on the court and in the success of our players in the classroom.

"Corey is a proven winner at every level of basketball and has been involved in all phases of our program — from recruiting to academics to strength training and on-court coaching — and helped us win the 2012 ACC Championship and play in a school record four consecutive NCAA Tournaments.”

While at Oral Roberts, Williams lead the recruiting efforts of power forward Caleb Green, a two-time honorable mention All-American and a three-time Player of the Year in the Mid-Continent Conference, and guard Ken Tutt, who played professionally overseas for six seasons.

Williams, a Georgia native, helped the Seminoles produce five NBA Draft picks during his time in Tallahassee.
