Hogs move to 8-0 with win over Austin Peay

Arkansas guard Jimmy Whitt Jr. (33) looks to pass Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019, around Austin Peay guard Jordyn Adams in Bud Walton Arena.

Arkansas 69, Austin Peay 61 - Final

Jimmy Whitt led Arkansas with 17 points, and Isaiah Joe and Mason Jones added 16 points apiece as the Razorbacks improved to 8-0 on the season.

Arkansas turned the ball over 20 times, one shy of its season-high against Rice on Nov. 5. Austin Peay committed 21 turnovers as well in what was a pretty sloppy game at times.

Terry Taylor scored a game-high 20 points for the Governors.

We'll have more from tonight's game later on WholeHogSports.com.

Arkansas 65, Austin Peay 52 - 1:58 left

Desi Sills knocked down two 3s in a 35-second span and Arkansas has its largest lead of the night at 13. Sills is 2 of 4 from 3-point range tonight, making him 4 of 34 for the season. He has eight points in this one.

Razorbacks are on a 10-3 run at the moment.

Arkansas 59, Austin Peay 49 - 4:00 left

Razorbacks are on a little 6-2 run and have pushed the lead to 10, their largest of the game.

Arkansas' most recent score was a Jimmy Whitt dunk off a terrific no-look feed from Jalen Harris. Whitt has 15 points on 7 of 12 from the floor. That was Harris' second assist of the game.

Meanwhile, Austin Peay has missed six of its last eight shots. Taylor still leads all scorers with 20.

Arkansas 55, Austin Peay 47 - 7:36 left

Austin Peay star Terry Taylor (18 points) picked up his fourth foul to send us to the under-8 media timeout. He's been huge for the Governors, who don't have another player with more than eight points tonight.

Mason Jones has a team-high 16 points for the Razorbacks, but he also has a career-high six turnovers. Jimmy Whitt has 13 points and Isaiah Joe has added 12, three in the second half.

Arkansas 49, Austin Peay 43 - 11:17 left

Isaiah Joe just knocked down a big 3 in transition to cushion the Razorbacks' lead a bit. His 3, plus a Mason Jones bucket at the rim, pushed Arkansas' advantage to eight at the time.

Austin Peay, though, scored a big bucket off a scramble play. Adrio Bailey's quick hands knocked the ball out of the hands of a Governors forward twice, but Terry Taylor came up with it and scored on an uncontested layup. Taylor has a game-high 14 points.

Arkansas 42, Austin Peay 38 - 15:03 left

Jimmy Whitt and Desi Sills each added layups to get the second half started, and Adrio Bailey has the Razorbacks' last four points on a layup at the rim and two free throws. Whitt has nine points. Sills' score was his first of the night.

Carlos Paez and Terry Taylor have each hit 3s for the Governors since halftime, and Jordyn Adams added another score. Austin Peay is hanging around, and I think fans in the arena are getting a bit anxious.

Arkansas 34, Austin Peay 30 - Half

The Governors closed the first half with four straight points to cut the Razorbacks' lead to just four.

Mason Jones (four turnovers) and Isaiah Joe lead Arkansas with 10 and nine points, respectively. They are a combined 4 of 7 from deep, which is good to see if you're Eric Musselman. Razorbacks shot 6 of 11 from 3-point range in the first half. Jalen Harris has the other two makes on three attempts.

Ethan Henderson just gave the Razorbacks some good minutes late in the half with Adrio Bailey and Reggie Chaney sitting with foul trouble. Henderson added two points, grabbed four rebounds and swatted three shots. He also picked up three fouls in his seven minutes.

Terry Taylor, the Governors' leading scorer averaging 23.3 points per game entering tonight, has nine points of 4 of 7 shooting. Austin Peay shot 10 of 25 from the floor and 2 of 8 from deep prior to halftime.

Arkansas 25, Austin Peay 20 - 3:44 left first half

Placed in the lineup largely due to foul trouble to Adrio Bailey and Reggie Chaney, sophomore Ethan Henderson provided a big lift and a lot of energy off the bench.

In three minutes, Henderson has blocked three shots, grabbed three rebounds and slammed one home off a Jalen Harris missed 3 from the left wing. He looked terrific. To send us to the media timeout, though, Terry Taylor shot faked Henderson off his feet, Taylor drew contact and got a layup to go.

Regardless, big minutes from Henderson, who contributed greatly to a 9-0 run.

Arkansas 16, Austin Peay 13 - 7:52 left first half

The difference in the game to this point is Jalen Harris' second 3 of the night from the left wing. Prior to this season, he had not made two 3s in a game in his college career - 65 games. He has two such games already this season.

Adrio Bailey, Desi Sills and Reggie Chaney are in some foul trouble. They each have two fouls and Austin Peay will be shooting free throws the remainder of the half. The Governors ranked 15th nationally in free throw rate coming into tonight, so I don't suppose this is a big surprise.

Jimmy Whitt leads Arkansas with seven points and Harris has six. Terry Taylor has four points for Austin Peay.

Arkansas 10, Austin Peay 9 - 11:31 left first half

Jalen Harris had the Razorbacks' only score between the media timeouts. He knocked down a 3 from the left wing. It's his fifth 3 of the season in only 13 attempts. He didn't make his fifth 3 last season until Jan. 12.

Jordyn Adams has a team-high four points for Austin Peay and Evan Hinson has three. Governors are 4 of 10 from the floor and 1 of 5 from deep. They have also turned the ball over five times.

Isaiah Joe, who knocked down an early 3, has a pair of turnovers tonight. He's been whistled for traveling twice.

Arkansas 7, Austin Peay 5 - 16:00 left first half

It feels like the Razorbacks have gotten off to a sluggish start, but they lead by two at the first stoppage in play. The Governors scored the first five points of the game, but Arkansas responded.

Jimmy Whitt has knocked down a pair of midrange jumpers in the early going, and Isaiah Joe hit his first 3 from the right wing. Potentially a good sign that Joe sees the ball go down in the first four minutes. He is now shooting 45 percent (9 of 20) beyond the arc from the right wing this season.

Pre-game

Arkansas' starting lineup: Isaiah Joe, Desi Sills, Jimmy Whitt, Mason Jones and Adrio Bailey.

Jones, who according to coach Eric Musselman has been dealing with an injured shoulder, is back in the starting lineup tonight after missing Saturday's game against Northern Kentucky. Jones is the Razorbacks' leading scorer, averaging 18.5 points per game on 50 percent from the floor and 29 percent from 3-point range.

Interested to see how Arkansas plans to defend Terry Taylor of Austin Peay. Slowing the star is something the Razorbacks have done this season with the exception of Dantez Walton on Saturday. He scored an efficient 30.

Austin Peay's starters: Jordyn Adams (6-3), Terry Taylor (6-5), Antwuan Butler (6-0), Eli Abaev (6-8) and Evan Hinson (6-4).

Taylor is the player to watch for the Governors. He takes 32.1 percent of Austin Peay's shots when on the floor and has finished 64 percent of his looks inside the arc this season. Taylor enters tonight averaging 23.3 points per game. He scored a season-high 37 points against Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 23 and 25 against South Carolina State last Monday.

As a team, the Governors rank in the top 15 nationally in offensive rebound rate (37 percent), but, oddly, are 343rd in allowing offensive rebounds, according to KenPom. Opponents have also shot 37.8 percent from 3-point range against Austin Peay. That is a key tonight as well as Arkansas looks to get on track from distance.
