Razorbacks win SEC opener with 6th consecutive shutout

Arkansas goalkeeper Katie Lund kicks the ball during a game against Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, in Fayetteville.

— A week off did not seem to slow down Arkansas’ red-hot soccer team.

The No. 16 Razorbacks defeated Alabama 1-0 at home Sunday in the first Southeastern Conference game for both teams. Arkansas (7-1-1) recorded its sixth consecutive shutout win.

Freshman Anna Podojil scored the game’s only goal in the seventh minute on a cross from Parker Goins, whose pass from back and left of the net caught Alabama goalkeeper Alex Plavin out of position. Podojil had an open look from just inside the 6-yard box.

The goal was Podojil’s team-leading sixth this season, and third in as many games. Goins leads the team with six assists.

Arkansas goalkeeper Katie Lund had six saves against an aggressive Alabama unit that had 22 shots and earned 12 corner kicks. The Crimson Tide (5-3-1, 0-1 SEC) had five shots on goal in the first half, but perhaps their best look came in the 62nd minute when Lund knocked Casey Wertz’s shot from eight yards over the crossbar.

Wertz’s run began on the opposite end of the field. She had an open left-footed look against Lund after weaving through two Arkansas defenders.

Lund has 22 saves in nine games this season and has been in net during all six games of the Razorbacks' win streak.

Arkansas is scheduled to conclude a three-game home stand Thursday with a game against No. 17 Vanderbilt.
