An annual convention of SEC leaders has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The SEC Spring Meetings have been scheduled for the final week of May in Destin, Fla., each year since 1985 and are attended by members of the league office, university chancellors, presidents and athletics directors, and head coaches of the league’s football and men’s and women’s basketball teams, among others.

The meetings have resulted in legislation changes for the conference, such as last year when league leaders voted to allow alcohol sales inside SEC venues for the first time. The SEC said it will explore alternate methods to hold its meetings this year.

"The SEC Spring Meetings represent one of our Conference's great traditions and provide an opportunity to celebrate the past year, plan for the future and focus on our mission to serve people through our universities," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement announcing this year’s cancellation. "We regret this year's event will not be held as planned, but we know cancellation is appropriate in the light of supporting safety and well-being during this unprecedented public health crisis."

Two weeks ago, the SEC canceled the remainder of its regular seasons for spring sports. All SEC teams are prohibited from in-person meetings or practices until at least April 15.

The league has yet to announce whether its annual Football Media Days, scheduled for July 13-16 in Atlanta, will be affected by the pandemic.
