Arkansas OL pledge Wells leads unbeaten Yellowjackets

Terry Wells

— It’s been a dream senior season so far for Arkansas offensive line pledge Terry Wells (6-5, 306) and his unbeaten Wynne Yellowjackets, and he is s also excited about what he has seen from his future college team.

The Razorbacks (1-2) almost pulled off its second straight road upset of a top-25 team on Saturday before falling 30-28 at No. 13 Auburn.

“I’ve seen a lot of grit out of the players,” Wells said. “The coaches have been doing a great job. Everyone seems like they are (working) together.”

He has stayed in contact with the other Arkansas pledges, a group ranked 25th nationally by ESPN.

“They feel great about everything and we are all ready to get up there and help continue the turnaround,” Wells said.

Wells also has a clear opinion on what happened near the end of the Arkansas-Auburn game when Tigers quarterback Bo Nix fumbled a snap while attempting to spike the football and stop the clock.

He spiked the ball backward, which set up a controversial ending.

“It was a fumble and we should have gotten the ball because we recovered it,” Wells said.

Wynne (6-0, 3-0) is ranked No. 2 on Class 5A behind Pulaski Academy, per the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, and coming off 28-14 win at Valley View.

The Yellowjackets have previously beaten Marion (35-19), West Memphis (39-6), Morrilton (20-19), Brookland (42-17) and Green County Tech (27-0).

“We’ve been working hard together, fixing the little things and focusing hard on leadership,” Wells said. “I’ve been doing well on everything. I’m working on perfecting everything I have to do in order to get better.”

Up next is a home game against Batesville (4-2, 3-0), who has won six of the last nine Class 5A-East Conference championships and finished tied with Wynne for third last season.

The Yellowjackets were picked as the preseason favorite in the conference by Hooten’s Arkansas Football with Batesville seen as their chief threat to the this year’s throne.

It is a rematch of Wynne’s 21-7 win at Batesville last season.

“Batesville is always good, so we will have to treat it like every game and play hard,” Wells said. “(Wynne head) Coach (Van Paschal) always teaches us to focus on the present and the future, and don’t look too much at the past. I feel great about it, and if we play our best and they play theirs, we will win the game.”
