Razorback cross country sweeps in Birmingham

The University of Arkansas men’s and women’s cross country teams both won titles Friday at the Blazer Classic in Meadowbrook, Ala.

Arkansas senior Amon Kemboi, a transfer from Campbell, won the men’s 8,000-meter race in 23 minutes, 25.46 seconds to lead a group of Razorbacks who took six of the top 10 spots.

The No. 4-ranked Razorbacks scored 29 points to win the nine-team race. Ole Miss was second with 50 points, with Florida State (97), Tennessee (110) and Georgia Tech (138) also in the top five.

Other finishers for Arkansas included Emmanuel Cheboson (fourth, 23:26.15); Luke Meade (seventh, 23:35.53); Andrew Kibet (eighth, 23:37.6); Gilbert Boit (ninth, 23:38.6); and Matt Young (10th, 23:40.59).

Arkansas’ No. 1-ranked women’s team was in a 10-team field and won with 42 points, followed by Georgia Tech (104), Florida State (115), Ole Miss (118) and Tennessee (121).

Lauren Gregory took fourth to lead Arkansas. She finished the 6,000-meter course in 20:22.5.

Also scoring for the Razorbacks were Logan Morris (seventh, 20:22.5); Abby Gray (ninth, 20:30.5); Taylor Ewert, (10th, 20:31.5); and Corie Smith (17th, 20:41.46).

The UA men and women next will run at the SEC Championships on Oct. 30 in Baton Rouge.

In the men’s gold division, Arkansas State University finished fifth with 115 points. Bennett Pascoe led the Red Wolves with a fifth-place finish in 24:22.93.

In the women’s gold division, Arkansas State finished fourth with 116 points. Pauline Meyer finished seventh in 21:18.68.
