Red Raiders to start lefty transfer vs. Arkansas

Texas Tech coach Tim Tadlock watches from third base during a College World Series game against Arkansas on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.

— Texas Tech plans to start redshirt senior left-handed pitcher Patrick Monteverde against Arkansas on Saturday at the College Baseball Showdown.

The Razorbacks have announced they will start junior right hander Zebulon Vermillion for the game that is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Monteverde (6-2, 190 pounds) is a transfer from Division II Seton Hill (Pa.), where he pitched sparingly the past two years. Monteverde missed most of the 2019 season after requiring Tommy John surgery and pitched 2 2/3 innings last year before the season was suspended due to the covid-19 outbreak.

As a sophomore in 2018, Monteverde started 14 games and was 4-3 with a 2.92 ERA in 71 innings. He began his career pitching for Division III Virginia Wesleyan in 2017.

Texas Tech does not have any of its three weekend starters from its team that went 16-3 a year ago. Clayton Beeter and Bryce Bonnin — an Arkansas transfer — were drafted last year, and Austin Becker is out this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The Red Raiders are also without projected weekend starter Hunter Dobbins because of Tommy John surgery.

Texas Tech will hold a couple of third-year pitchers with starting experience for its other games in Arlington. Micah Dallas, the team's No. 1 starter two years ago and a reliever last season, is scheduled to pitch against Ole Miss on Sunday, while Mason Montgomery, a left hander who started four games last season, will start against Mississippi State on Monday.

Texas, TCU announce starters

Texas plans to start fourth-year junior right hander Tristan Stevens (6-2, 200) against Arkansas on Sunday, and TCU will start third-year sophomore left hander Austin Krob (6-3, 205) against the Razorbacks on Monday.

Arkansas plans to start second-year right hander Peyton Pallette against Texas and graduate-senior left hander Lael Lockhart against TCU.

Stevens pitched against the Razorbacks in 2019 when the Longhorns won 7-6 in the second game of a two-game series in Austin. Stevens retired the only two batters he faced that night.

Stevens went 2-0 and had a 1.50 ERA in six innings as a reliever last season. He led Texas with 23 appearances in 2019 when he had a 5.31 ERA.

Krob did not allow a run in 11 2/3 innings out of the bullpen last season for the Horned Frogs. He earned a save when he struck out five over 3 1/3 innings against No. 2 UCLA last March.

Krob began his career at Kirkwood (Iowa) Community College.
