Dumas lineman commits to Razorbacks

Dumas offensive and defensive lineman Jon Stanley Hill has committed to Arkansas as a preferred walk-on.

Hill is the fourth in-state recruit to pledge to walk-on with the Hogs since Jan. 17.

“It means a lot with the history they have and just to be a part of that just means lot deep down in my heart,” Hill said.

Hill, 6-5, 245 pounds, has offers from Ouachita Baptist and Northeastern (Okla.) State. Memphis, Arkansas Tech and several others also showed interest.

Dumas coach George Shelton, who has been a head coach for 16 years, said Hill is the best lineman he has coached.

“I’ve never had a lineman that’s on his level as a head football coach,” Shelton said. "He probably started the season at 265 pounds and probably at the end of the season he might have been 245 because he never comes off the field.”

Hill spoke with Arkansas coach Sam Pittman and was informed of the offer to walk-on. That led him to say, “I about did a back flip."

“Coach Pittman just told be a little while ago that he talked to coach Shelton and he said he talked highly about me,” Hill said. “When Coach Pittman called me he gave me this opportunity, and I’m going to take it.”

Hill recorded 71 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, a forced fumble and 2 blocked punts, and helped the offense produce more than 4,000 total yards.

He appreciated Jesse Stone’s efforts in the recruiting process and their love for hunting. Stone is Arkansas' director of personnel for offense.

“It was a good relationship that we built,” Hill said. “He liked to talk to my dad a lot. That meant a lot to me. He talked about duck hunting and he asked what I’ve been doing.”

Hill, who has a 3.6-grade point average, has recorded 5.01 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 4.13 seconds in the pro-agility drill and has a 30-inch vertical.

Once he gets to Fayetteville, he’ll be reunited with his sister Summer, who is a freshman twirler in the Razorback Marching Band.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “To wear the same colors again, it’s going to be one heck of a story.”
