Wicklander to start Game 1 at Mississippi State

Arkansas pitcher Patrick Wicklander throws during a game against Alabama on Friday, March 19, 2021, in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas left hander Patrick Wicklander will join the weekend pitching rotation during the Razorbacks’ series at Mississippi State.

Wicklander (0-0, 2.51 ERA) will start Friday when the No. 2 Razorbacks are scheduled to play the No. 4 Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m.

Arkansas will also throw right hander Zebulon Vermillion (2-0, 2.13) on Saturday and left hander Lael Lockhart (1-1, 2.38) on Sunday. Mississippi State (16-4, 2-1 SEC) has not announced a weekend rotation.

Friday’s start will be Wicklander’s second this season, but first during a weekend series. Wicklander struggled with command during a 1 2/3-inning no-decision against Oklahoma last Tuesday, but bounced back with 5 1/3 innings of of 1-run relief against Alabama in the next game.

In 14 1/3 innings, Wicklander has allowed 4 runs, 15 hits, 4 walks and struck out 14.

Wicklander has 19 career starts, which are second most on Arkansas’ team. He was the Razorbacks’ No. 3 weekend starter for most of the 2019 season when he was named Freshman All-SEC.

Wicklander will replace Peyton Pallette in the rotation. Pallette allowed four runs in one-plus inning last week against Alabama.

The Razorbacks (16-3, 2-1) have won four straight games following a 9-4 victory over Memphis on Wednesday.
