Slavens 'very questionable' for regional play

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas might be without first baseman Brady Slavens when regional play begins Friday against the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
A semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, Slavens is “very, very questionable” for this weekend’s games, Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said Monday. Slavens was assisted off the field during the second inning of the team’s 11-2 victory over Georgia in its SEC Tournament opener last Wednesday after he turned his right ankle while stepping on first base to beat out a two-run single.
A team spokesman said last week that Slavens has a lateral ankle sprain and will need one to three weeks of recovery time.
Van Horn, who noted Slavens was not wearing a walking boot Monday, said he was unsure if the junior could pinch hit if he is unable to play in the field.
“I don’t know if he could put solid weight on it and get down the line to get to first base, so I would say if he can’t get to first base, obviously, I don’t think we could put him up there,” Van Horn said.
Slavens is batting .300 for the season with 13 home runs and 60 RBI over 52 games.
Arkansas will know the status of right-handed pitcher Zebulon Vermillion on Tuesday. Van Horn initially said Vermillion would undergo an MRI on Monday.
“I thought we were going to get him looked at (Monday), but we’ll know (Tuesday) night,” Van Horn said.
Vermillion removed himself from Saturday’s semifinal game against Ole Miss after three pitches with what was initially described as bicep cramping. He is 3-0 with a 4.69 ERA in 15 appearances this season.
