What Sam Pittman said recapping Rice, looking ahead to Texas

Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman speaks to reporters during a news conference Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021, in Fayetteville.

• Pittman said the team is excited to play Texas. He said the Arkansas players will be "educated on the history" of the series "and they need to be."

• On the Rice game, Pittman said the game film showed "simple fixes" that should have already been made in practice. He said the offensive line was physical and played hard. He said the offensive line wore down Rice's defense. "We won 38-17, but we certainly can get a lot better and I can be a better coach."

• Of the Texas game over the weekend, Pittman said Steve Sarkisian showed strong schehmatics. He said running back Bijan Robinson is "really special."

• Pittman said Treylon Burks didn't play well, which was likely due to a lack of practice. He will practice all week before the Texas game.

• Pittman called Texas QB Hudson Card "a really fine player." Robinson "is hard to tackle and has an elusiveness in space, but he also runs over you. He has a lot of speed." He noted Robinson also returns kicks and punts, "so they obviously think of him...what I do. He's a special player."

• Pittman said Andrew Parker is playing faster this year. He was "questioning everything" last year. Pittman said he did a "fine job" against Rice and made some "nice open-field tackles."

• Pittman said he's sure Bumper Pool is disappointed he won't be able to play his home-state team in the first half. Pittman said the targeting penalty is harsh, but is understandable. "It's hard when the running back is running and he's dropping his head, or the wide receiver."

• Pittman said he and Barry Odom spoke about changing the players' "tackle target" to try to lower the number of targeting penalties. "You've got to make sure that headgear is out of there....I understand the rule. I think there is a lot of good thought behind that rule. The punishment just seems very harsh to me."

• Pittman said John Ridgeway (appendectomy) should be able to play Saturday.

• Pittman said he liked the team's rotation on the defensive line against Rice. He said the group played well. "We wore them out on the D-line, too....I think part of those interceptions came because our D-line had hit him several times."

• Pittman said he didn't want to "make a mountain of a mole hill" about KJ Jefferson's missed throws. He said he was disappointed with a couple of decisions related to throwing the ball into traffic or not throwing the ball away.

• Pittman said Jefferson becomes a better passer after he makes some runs.

• Pittman said center Ricky Stromberg played well Saturday, but he also had some "floating snaps" that he has to get corrected.

• Pittman said Arkansas was three-and-out too many times to throw a lot of deep, vertical passes. "We're trying to figure out how to stay on the field a little bit," he said. In the second half, he said the vertical passing game was better. He said Jefferson can throw deep passes and the Razorbacks have the receivers to make those plays.

• Pittman said that as a kid growing up in Oklahoma, he had more of a disdain for Nebraska than Texas. He said he can remember the intense rivalry with Texas when he was an assistant coach for Oklahoma.

• Pittman called the 2014 Texas Bowl against the Longhorns "dynamic." He said the atmosphere was better than when Georgia played Texas in the Sugar Bowl a few years later. Pittman was an assistant coach in both games.

• Pittman said he and Texas defensive assistant Terry Joseph worked together at Tennessee.

• Pittman said Jefferson "probably took a lot of heat" after the game. "Everyone has an opinion, but the one that really matters is mine. He's our quarterback." He credited Jefferson playing well in the second half after not playing well in the first half. "He corrected it."

• Pittman said a lot of things need to be fixed after the Rice game. He said there were a lot of mistakes, but less than he initially thought after watching game film.

• He said the team didn't have an effort problem Saturday. He said when you have problems on your team, it's usually due to an effort problem. He said things that happened Saturday can be fixed.

• Pittman said the coaching staff has looked at last year's Alabama game to try to pick up on Steve Sarkisian's play calling. He was the Alabama OC at the time. Pittman said Sarkisian might have been a little bit conservative during that game.

• Pittman said he thinks Sarkisian is one of the best player callers in the game. "He's a phenomenal offensive mind."
