White, Little Rock Christian to test Maumelle

Walker White

One of the state’s top young quarterbacks with a Razorback family legacy will face a couple of future Arkansas players on Friday.

Little Rock Christian sophomore quarterback Walker White (6-4, 220) will lead his Warriors (4-0) against visiting Maumelle (1-3), a squad that boasts Razorback offensive line commit Andrew Chamblee (6-6, 284) and defensive line pledge Nico Davillier (6-5, 275).

Little Rock Christian coach Eric Cohu reminded his team earlier this week that Friday night’s contest begins the time when teams earn the right to play for conference and state titles.

“We have had a very good nonconference outing and we’re 4-0 and happy about that, but as I reminded the team this morning before school, you have to win conference games to make the playoffs,” Cohu said. “It’s a new season and we have a tough Maumelle team on Friday night.”

Maumelle won its opener against Sylvan Hills, but has since lost to Joe T. Robinson (47-44), Vilonia (34-32) and Shreveport (La.) Byrd 24-21.

“They have really good linemen on both sides of the ball that are big and imposing sights,” Cohu said. “They have size and are an athletic football team and are just so dangerous because they have so many weapons on both sides of the ball.

“We are going to have to play our best game of the season, execute well, win the turnover battle and play really, really good defense.”

Little Rock Christian has blitzed Little Rock Central (41-8), Searcy (38-20), Magnolia (42-27) and Olive Branch (Miss.) Center Hill (59-0) so far this season.

White, who has offers from Tulsa and UCA and interest from Arkansas, Oklahoma and others, is the younger brother of current Arkansas receiver John David White and Diamond Hog Zac White, and the son of former Razorback golfer David White.

White’s great grandfather, Harold “Greasy” Rees, and grandfather, John Rees, both played football for the Razorbacks, as did his uncle, John Aaron Rees.

Walker White is 48 of 82 passing for 724 yards this season with 7 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He has rushed for 178 yards and 2 more scores.

“He had one of his better games last Friday night in Mississippi,” Cohu said. “He is getting better every week. Definitely there are times when his youth shows up, but his size, speed and arm strength and all the athletic metrics show up.”

Cohu is impressed with White’s work ethic.

“He is so committed and hard-working and is focused on learning and getting better and that has really paid dividends for him,” Cohu said. “Each week you are seeing him improve.”

Senior tailback Jayvean Dyer-Jones has 594 yards rushing and 9 touchdowns to lead the Warriors on the ground.

“Jayvean Dyer-Jones our all-state returning running back. Had 1,400 yards last season even with teams pulling out on us in a covid-shorten season,” Cohu said. “He is already off on a fast pace, scoring touchdowns every game and over 100 yards every game. He is definitely a returning anchor to that offense and we have a lot of offensive linemen who are paving that way.”

Eli Cooper has been White’s favorite receiving target with 14 catches for 272 yards and four scores.

“Eli Cooper is kind of our go-to guy through the air," Cohu said. "He has had several receptions and touchdowns and we have a good supporting cast of other receivers and running backs.

"We are trying to spread the ball to a lot of people to play as effective as possible.”
