Notes and observations from Monday's football practice

Arkansas running back Dominique Johnson carries the ball Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, during practice at the university practice facility in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ football team held its first practice of the fall semester on Monday. The Razorbacks were outdoors and under overcast skies.

Here are some notes and observations from the opening viewing periods:

• Several players we had not seen through the first two-plus weeks of camp were present, including running back Dominique Johnson, quarterback Kade Renfro and Chase Lowery.

Johnson was wearing a green no-contact jersey and a brace on his right knee. He looked to be moving really well during running back position drills. Johnson is a big body, and I think the time we were not able to lay eyes on him made me forget about his size a bit.

He is listed at 247 pounds on the updated roster, up from 228 pounds at the end of last season or in spring drills.

• Sam Pittman noted Saturday that center Ricky Stromberg suffered a hyperextended elbow in the team’s second scrimmage and was pulled out of play. He appeared to be full-go on Monday, but his right elbow was wrapped up pretty good.

• Renfro was at practice and wearing a brace on his left knee. Other players in green were receiver Jaedon Wilson (shoulder) and offensive lineman Marcus Henderson (pectoral).

Pittman over the weekend said Wilson was battling an injury, and it was clearly giving him issues and impacting his ability to catch passes on air. He missed a few practices last week. Henderson continued getting in individual work away from the offensive line.

• Lowery, who signed with the Razorbacks as a defensive back, is back with the team since classes have begun. He is, however, now playing receiver and wearing No. 87.

• Did not see offensive linemen Devon Manuel (undisclosed) or Josh Street (ankle).

• I continue to be impressed with receiver Warren Thompson. He is moving so confidently and I cannot recall any drops from him when running routes on air. Add that in with solid scrimmage showings and impressive wins in 1-on-1s, I think he’s in for a big season.
