FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas guard Anthony Black picked up an honor from the SEC on Monday.

Black was named SEC co-freshman of the week for his play in the Razorbacks’ 2-1 run at the Maui Invitational last week. He shared the award with Ole Miss guard Amaree Abram, who averaged 20.7 points last week at the ESPN Events Invitational.

The 6-7 freshman led Arkansas with 26 points against both Louisville and then-No. 10 Creighton, and he added 15 points in the Razorbacks’ overtime victory against then-No. 17 San Diego State. Black averaged an event-high 22.3 points per game.

He also contributed 4.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. Black was Arkansas’ representative on the all-tournament team.

“I come into the game trying to do what the team needs me to do, so throughout the flow of the game I kind of figure out what they need me to do,” Black said Saturday. “I was just getting good looks, teammates were setting me up.

“I didn’t really surprise myself. I know whenever the team needs me to score, I’m going to score and be aggressive in those big games.”

Through six games, Black is second on the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game on 48.3% shooting. He is tied for the lead with 21 assists, first with 14 steals and second with 32 rebounds.

Arkansas returns to play tonight against Troy in Bud Walton Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on SEC Network.
