Razorbacks to scrimmage professional baseball roster in October

Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn is shown during practice Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021, in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas will play a pair of baseball exhibition games against the Texas Rangers’ Instructional League team on Oct. 12-13, coach Dave Van Horn said Friday.

Both games will be played at Baum-Walker Stadium. More details will be announced in the upcoming days.

On Sept. 1,Van Horn said he had discussions with the Rangers about a potential scrimmage but was unsure if the teams would be able to sync their schedules. The Rangers’ Instructional League team played four Texas colleges on their campuses last fall — Texas Tech, Dallas Baptist, Baylor and TCU.

The games against the Rangers will be the only against outside competition Arkansas will play during its fall practice season, which began in early September and concludes in late October. The Razorbacks have previously played fall scrimmages against Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Wichita State and Arkansas-Little Rock, but have not scrimmaged any college teams since 2019.

The Rangers’ Instructional League team is based at the organization’s Spring Training home in Surprise, Ariz. The 2022 roster has not been announced. Last year’s 68-man roster included players ranging from ages 17 to 27.
