Notes and observations from Thursday's spring practice

Jacolby Criswell throws a pass during a spring football practice on Tuesday March 14, 2023.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ football team went through practice No. 13 of the spring Thursday outside Walker Pavilion.

The Razorbacks worked out in shoulder pads and helmets under a clear sky. They have a Friday practice prior to Saturday’s spring showcase.

Here are a few notes and observations from the viewing window:

• I did not see Taurean Carter in the team periods. The tackle who injured his knee around this time last spring has been a staple on the first-team line, but Marcus Miller took his place Thursday alongside ends Landon Jackson and Jashaud Stewart, and Eric Gregory at the other tackle spot.

Gregory wore a brace on his left knee. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported he had an arthroscopic procedure done between the end of the regular season and the Liberty Bowl against Kansas in December.

• Wide receiver Tyrone Broden did not have the heavy wrap on his knee he had worn in previous workouts. He took part in some of the team work. I did not see a ball thrown his way.

Sam Pittman said a couple of weeks ago that Broden had a minor MCL injury that would not require surgery. The Bowling Green transfer, who stands 6-7, was injured in a collision with fellow transfer wideout Andrew Armstrong weeks ago.

• Here are some of the top plays from the team segments of practice:

- From his safety spot, Jayden Johnson broke up a pass by KJ Jefferson, but Jefferson later found tight end Luke Hasz on a ball down the left sideline that Johnson was a step late on. Co-defensive coordinator Marcus Woodson was vocal with Johnson when he was one the field, correcting missteps and encouraging him to be vocal in the back end.

- Hasz also made a nice grab along the left sideline during the first team period. Pittman said a couple of weeks ago that the freshman simply makes plays in practice, and he has continued to do so.

- Jacolby Criswell threw a dart roughly 15 yards down a seam to Hasz. Criswell really has a live arm. Pittman, standing just off the field during a team session, was clearly impressed with the North Carolina transfer’s work.

- Cade Fortin also hooked up with receiver Landon Rogers on a deep ball.
