Tygart return possible at Georgia, Wegner undergoes surgery

Arkansas reliever Brady Tygart delivers to the plate Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, during the eighth inning of the Razorbacks’ 9-7 win over Grambling at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas right-handed pitcher Brady Tygart might be available to pitch during the Razorbacks' series at Georgia that is scheduled to begin Thursday.

Tygart, a sophomore, has not pitched in a game since he suffered a sprained ulnar collateral ligament during a game against Illinois State on March 1. Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said Tygart will probably be on the team's 27-man roster at Georgia.

Tygart traveled with the team on trips to LSU and Ole Miss, but was not on the 27-man roster for those series.

"If you see him on [the roster] you’ll probably see him throw," Van Horn said.

Tygart had a great start to the season. Prior to the game when he was injured and appeared to pitch through discomfort, he allowed 1 run and struck out 8 in 4 2/3 innings.

He pitched 1 2/3 innings against Illinois State. He allowed three earned runs on two home runs, and another run that was unearned.

Tygart was Arkansas' primary closer for most of the 2022 season when he was named a Freshman All-American and led the team with eight saves.

“He was possibly going to be a starter for us this year,” Van Horn said April 3. “We didn’t know how that was going to go. That still could happen.”

In other injury news, Van Horn said outfielder Jared Wegner underwent surgery Monday to repair a hairline fracture in his left thumb. Wegner had two pins inserted, Van Horn said.

The timeline for Wegner's return to the lineup is still sometime next month, either the South Carolina series May 12-14 or the regular-season finale the following week at Vanderbilt.

Wegner is batting .351 and leads Arkansas with 12 home runs and 44 RBI. He has not played since injuring his thumb while sliding into third base during a game against Arkansas-Little Rock on April 11.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referred to the 27-man weekend roster as a travel roster. More than 27 players can travel for baseball trips.
