Soto Torrado finishes sixth in decathlon

Arkansas junior Yariel Soto Torrado finished sixth in the decathlon with a personal-best 7,919 points on Thursday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas.

Soto Torrado scored three points to add to the No. 1-ranked Razorbacks’ team lead through seven of 21 finals with 24 points. Stanford is second with 18 points.

Soto Torrado, a transfer from Tennessee whose final point total ranks No. 3 on Arkansas’ all-time list, finished by running 4 minutes, 36.01 seconds in the 1,500 meters for the fourth-fastest time. He also had the fourth-best mark in the pole vault with a clearance of 16 feet, 1 1/4 inches.

Texas junior Leo Neugebauer won the decathlon and set an NCAA record with 8,836 points. He broke the previous meet record of 8,457 shared by Arkansas’ Ayden Owens-Delerme and Oregon’s Ashton Eaton.

Georgia junior Kyle Garland, the collegiate record holder, was second with 8,630 points.

Arkansas senior Daniel Spejcher finished 10th with 7,688 points. Razorbacks sophomore Marcus Weaver, who didn’t compete in four events because of a foot injury, finished 21st with 4,222 points.
