Arkansas men’s capsules
LITTLE ROCK Marshawn Powell CLASS Redshirt junior HEIGHT 6-7 WEIGHT 240 POSITION Forward HIGH SCHOOL The Miller (Va.) School LAST SEASON Averaged 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds THE SKINNY Powell is back and close to 100 percent recovered from right knee surgery he underwent last winter to repair a torn ligament, which caused him to miss all but the first two games. He is the team’s most experienced player, and his return should result in a huge boost for the inside game. He was a preseason All-SEC second-team pick.
Mardracus Wade CLASS Junior HEIGHT 6-2 WEIGHT 175 POSITION Guard HIGH SCHOOL Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy LAST SEASON Averaged 10.8 points and 1.8 rebounds THE SKINNY Wade developed into one of the country’s top three-point shooters last season when he hit 47.6 percent (70 of 147) from beyondthe arc. He figures to get better looks this season with an improved inside game to open up the perimeter. Coach Mike Anderson said he’s also expecting Wade to be a defensive force.
Rickey Scott CLASS Junior HEIGHT 6-3 WEIGHT 205 POSITION Guard HIGH SCHOOL Irving (Texas) MacArthur LAST SEASON Averaged 9.1 points and 3.5 rebounds THE SKINNY Scott is among the options at point guard. He had the highest number of assists last season (79) among returning players and will need to be more of a playmaker with Julysses Nobles’ transfer. He does a good job of pushing the ball on the break and plays physical defense. He needs to become a more consistent shooter after hitting 11 of 61 three-point attempts last season.
Coty Clarke CLASS Junior HEIGHT 6-7 WEIGHT 225 POSITION Forward JUNIOR COLLEGE Lawson State (Ala.) LAST SEASON Averaged 14.5 points and 13.0 rebounds THE SKINNY Clarke is a physical inside player the Razorbacks desperately need and is an especially aggressive rebounder. He also handles the ball well for a post player and can run the floor. As a sophomore, he led Lawson State in rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots. Anderson loves his nose for the ball.
Fred Gulley CLASS Redshirt junior HEIGHT 6-2 WEIGHT 177 POSITION Guard HIGH SCHOOL Fayetteville LAST SEASON Averaged 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in 8 games at Oklahoma State THE SKINNY Gulley transferred to Arkansas from Oklahoma State last January, so he has to sit out the first-semester games this season, then will be eligible to play in early December. He alreadyhas redshirted as a true freshman at Oklahoma State. He’s a solid ball-handler who can help at point guard.
Alandise Harris CLASS Junior HEIGHT 6-6 WEIGHT 230 POSITION Forward HIGH SCHOOL Little Rock Central LAST SEASON Averaged 13.3 points and 6.4 rebounds at Houston THE SKINNY The NCAA denied Harris’ waiver for immediate eligibility, so he’ll redshirt this season after transferring from Houston, where he averaged 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds over two seasons as a starter. He should fit into Anderson’s system well with his athleticism. Harris certainly could have made a contribution in games this season, but it will be a plus to have him at practice.
Kikko Haydar CLASS Junior HEIGHT 5-10 WEIGHT 165 POSITION Guard HIGH SCHOOL Fayetteville LAST SEASON Averaged 0.5 points and 0.4 rebounds THE SKINNY Walk-on who plays hard and helps the team have quality practices. He played in 20 games last season.

He might have been a firstround NBA Draft pick last season but chose to return to Arkansas to improve his all-around game. He shot 50.7 from the field last year and is versatile scorer driving to the basket and shooting outside.
Ky Madden CLASS Sophomore HEIGHT 6-5 WEIGHT 180 POSITION Guard HIGH SCHOOL East Poinsett County LAST SEASON Averaged 6.6 points and 3.3 reboundsTHE SKINNY Madden figures to get a lot of time at point guard with his ability to pass and handle the ball. He can score, but he doesn’t have to in order to be effective. He’s a good defender, and the undersized Razorbacks will need him to rebound. He needs to be more consistent; his play fell off over the latter part of last season.
Hunter Mickelson CLASS Sophomore HEIGHT 6-10 WEIGHT 245 POSITION Forward HIGH SCHOOL Jonesboro Westside LAST SEASON Averaged 5.2 points and 3.7 rebounds THE SKINNY Mickelson set an Arkansas freshman record with 72 blocked shots last season. He would have had more, but foul problems limited him to 17.1 minutes a game. He needs to become more physical as an inside player and improve his free-throw shooting after hitting 51.6 percent (16 of 31) from the line.
Davion Spivey CLASS Sophomore HEIGHT 6-2 WEIGHT 210 POSITION Guard JUNIOR COLLEGE Holmes (Miss.) LAST SEASON Redshirted THE SKINNY Spivey, a walk-on, won the slamdunk contest at Arkansas’ “Primetime at the Palace” practice to open the season.
