Mitchell won't return until LSU game

Brandon Mitchell will likely have a chance to earn the starting quarterback job when spring practice begins on March 10. The Red-White game will conclude spring practices on April 20.

— Arkansas’ third-leading receiver will return for the Razorbacks’ regular season finale against LSU, coach John L. Smith said Thursday.

Brandon Mitchell, who has missed the last two games for a violation of team rules, will serve a four-game university-imposed suspension, Smith said. The coach, who has given vague details regarding the redshirt junior’s suspension in recent weeks, continued to sidestep questions Thursday regarding possible NCAA compliance violations as it related to Mitchell.

“We have a resolution, we have a solution and it’s just one of those things where we discovered there was a problem, checked into the problem and made a decision,” Smith said. “Now we’re correcting the problem. He’s a quality young man that we love and is a valued part of this team.”

A former quarterback, Mitchell began the season as a starting receiver for Arkansas but his production has tailed off in recent weeks. He caught four passes for 122 yards in the season-opener against Jacksonville State but has just 11 receptions for 135 yards since.

He took snaps at quarterback during the Razorbacks’ game against Alabama and threw a touchdown pass from his receiver position in a win over Auburn.
