Arkansas leads nation with 11 drafted players

Arkansas reliever Brandon Moore joined three other junior pitchers to be selected in the 2013 MLB draft on Saturday.

— Arkansas led the nation and set a school record with 11 players selected in the 2013 MLB draft over the weekend.

Those 11 players where selected by nine different organizations during the draft, which spanned three days and concluded Saturday.

The Razorbacks had eight players selected on the final day, which consisted of rounds 11-40.

Arkansas had three pitchers taken in the top 90 picks with Ryne Stanek going in the first round (29th overall) to the Tampa Bay Rays, Colby Suggs rounding out the first day selections as he was drafted in the second round (73rd overall) by the Miami Marlins and Barrett Astin joined his fellow junior right-handers as the 90th overall selection (third round) by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Razorbacks had one more junior right-hander that was a member of the 2010 signing class, Brandon Moore, drafted Saturday. He was selected by the Brewers with the 512th overall pick in the draft (17th round).

Right-handed pitcher Nolan Sanburn was also a member of the 2010 signing class. He was selected in the second round of the 2012 MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics.

In addition to the four right-handed juniors, Arkansas had three senior left-handed pitchers, Trent Daniel (17th round, 499th overall), Tyler Wright (26th round, 777th overall) and Randall Fant (29th round, 857th overall), drafted on the final day of this year's draft.

It was no secret that Arkansas struggled at the plate often last season, batting at a .260 clip as a team. But the Razorbacks had four hitters taken Saturday. Dominic Ficociello was the first Arkansas player to be taken on the final day when the Detroit Tigers selected the junior infielder in the 12th round (366th overall). Jacob Morris (24th round, 723rd overall), Eric Fisher (30th round, 892nd overall) and Matt Vinson (37th round, 1110th overall) were also drafted Saturday.

Arkansas had just four signees taken, though at least two of them are unlikely to make it to campus. Right-handed pitcher Teddy Stankiewicz was a first-day pick, drafted by the Boston Red Sox with the 45th overall pick in the second round. The Red Sox also drafted catcher Jon Denney in the third round with the 81st overall pick.

Right-handed pitcher Jacob Stone and outfielder Andrew Benintendi were the last Arkansas signees to be selected. The Colorado Rockies drafted Stone in the 30th round (889th overall) and the Reds drafted Benintendi in the 31st round (945th overall).
