Top prospect has Hogs in top three

Arkansas is a finalist for athlete Kevin Shorter, one of the top prospects in the nation.

Shorter, 5-11, 185, 4.38 seconds in the 40 yard dash, of Newton, Texas helped lead the Eagles to a 13-1 record by rushing for 1,810 yards on 151 rushes for a 12 yard per carry average while scoring 31 touchdowns this past season.

Shorter, who said his top three consists of Arkansas, Texas A&M and LSU, said he spoke with Coach Bret Bielema and running backs coach Joel Thomas Sunday night. He's cousins with Hog cornerback signee D.J. Dean.

In the April 28 edition of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Newton Coach W.T. Johnston commented on Shorter's versatility.

"He can do a lot of things," Johnston said. "He can catch the ball, he can run with the ball, he can block, he's a very good blocker. He can throw the ball, he's very good in the secondary, he's a kick returner and punt returner ."

Johnston, who along with his wife Debbie are Hot Springs natives, said Shorter plays with confidence.

"He's a very confident kid," Johnston said. "That's a lot of it. He's not an arrogant kid but he's a confident kid."
