Arkansas tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr. made his way to Highland on Monday to see junior athlete Avery Johnson and receiver Deon Stewart.
Stewart, 6-1, 163, 4.48 seconds in the 40 yard dash, has recorded 25 receptions for 566 yards, 7 touchdowns and 16 rushes for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns while returning 10 kickoffs for 361 yards and 2 touchdowns. Video highlights click here
His speed and playmaking ability jumps off his video and has the Hogs highly interested.
“That would mean a lot,” said Stewart of an offer from the Razorbacks. “To get an offer a scholarship to Arkansas and be the first in my family to be offered an athletic scholarship, it would mean a lot.”
Highland Coach Spencer Hill said Stewart can go the distance at anytime.
“He’s just a silky smooth player that’s got great feet, great explosiveness,” Hill said. “It’s a just a big play anytime he gets the ball in his hands.”
Stewart, who also has 6 interceptions, doesn’t know how to describe his ability to make defenders miss in the open field.
“I honestly don’t even know,” Stewart said. “I guess I go wherever my legs take me.”
He admires several receivers.
“I really like Keon Hatcher for the Hogs,” said Stewart, who along with Johnson attended Arkansas‘ game against Texas A&M. “Victor Cruz number 80 for the Giants and I love DeAnthony Thomas. I just the way that guy runs.”
