Whitt's father, Jim said Jimmy and the family have known Coach Mike Anderson and associate head coach Melvin Watkins since Jimmy was in the third grade. They think highly of Anderson and Watkins as coaches and people.

Whitt's high school team plays uptempo and that was also a big reason for his decision.

The elder Whitt said he started coaching Arkansas running back Kody Walker as a sixth grader up to the start of high school in AAU basketball.
