The Arkansas men's golf team did not make the eight-team cut for match play at the NCAA Golf Championships Monday, but the Razorbacks finished strong in the final-round with a 1-under par 279 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

Arkansas ended up tied for 17th in the 30-team field, but the Razorbacks could not overcome a 12-over showing in the opening round and finished at 17 over for the tournament.

The Raorbacks finished 12 shots behind Illinois and SMU, who tied for seventh and took the final two match-play spots at 5 over.

Arkansas Coach Brad McMakin said the Hogs were at 9 over for the tournament with five holes to go Monday and in position to challenge for the top eight before losing strokes down the stretch.

"After the first round, just to have a chance to get back in the eight, I was really proud of the way the guys came back and got back in it," McMakin said after the Razorbacks completed their round Monday morning. "

No. 3 Stanford was the runaway leader after the stroke play at 13 under, nine shots better than defending champion Alabama and No. 16 LSU. Oklahoma State finished fourth at even par. The other four qualifiers were Georgia Tech (1 over), UCLA (4 over), Illinois (5 over) and SMU (5 over). South Carolina was in position to make the final eight before Will Starke and Will Murphy played the final two holes in 6 over and the Gamecocks came up one stroke short of tying for eighth.

Stanford's Cameron Wilson beat Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans on the third hole of a playoff for medalist honors after both players tied at 6 under.

The Razorbacks were led by senior Sebastian Cappelen, who at one point on Monday was tied for second place at 5 under before a couple of late bogeys sent him to 3-under 207 for the championship. Cappelen finished in a tie for ninth place.

"He's been great. Four years, a four-time All-American," McMakin said. "He's done a great job off the golf course. He helped me get better recruits."

Sophomore Kolton Crawford shot even par 70 in the final round and wound up at 5 over for the tournament. Sophomore Taylor Moore finished at 7 over, sophomore Nicolas Echavarria was at 8 over and senior Blake Biddle came in at 18 over.

Purdue freshman Austin Eoff of Benton had a 12 over and tied for 120th place.
