Targeting benches Gaines

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema confers with a game official against LSU during the second quarter Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas junior safety Rohan Gaines Saturday night became the second Razorback ejected from a game for targeting this season.

Gaines was called for lowering his helmet to hit LSU receiver DeSean Smith on an incomplete pass with 9:41 left in the third quarter.

Because Gaines was ejected in the second half Saturday night, he'll have to sit out the first half of Arkansas' next game against Ole Miss.

True freshman Josh Liddell replaced Gaines.

Linebacker Braylon Mitchell was the first Razorback ejected for targeting, when he drew a penalty against Georgia leading with his helmet on a hit to the face of quarterback Hutson Mason when both players were falling down.

Mitchell's ejection came in the second quarter, so he sat out the rest of the game.

Korliss returns

Arkansas sophomore Korliss Marshall, coming off a three-game suspension for an undisclosed disciplinary reason, didn't get to return the opening kickoff when the ball sailed into the end zone for a touchback.

But Marshall quickly made his presence as a receiver. Marshall caught two passes, each for 14 yards each on the Razorbacks' first possession, when they drove 60 yards in 11 plays and went ahead on a 32-yard field goal by Adam McFain.

Coldest in 19 years

Apparently teams from Louisiana bring out the cold in Arkansas home football games.

The temperature at kickoff for Saturday night's game was announced as 33 degrees, making it Arkansas' coldest game in Fayetteville since Nov. 11, 1995, when the Razorbacks beat Southwestern Louisiana 24-13.

The Razorbacks and Ragin' Cajuns played in an afternoon game with the temperature 31 degrees at kickoff.

Saturday night was LSU's coldest game since 1992, when the Tigers also played at Fayetteville and lost 30-6 with a kickoff temperature of 31 degrees.

Rankled no more

Arkansas broke a 14-game losing streak against nationally ranked teams with its victory over No. 20 LSU.

Before Saturday's game, the Razorbacks' last victory over a ranked team came when No. 7 Arkansas beat No. 11 Kansas State 29-16 in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 7, 2012.

The Razorbacks had been 0-5 against ranked teams this season with losses to Auburn, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi State.

For starters

Senior outside linebacker Braylon Mitchell made his fourth start of the season, with Arkansas facing a strong rushing team in LSU.

Freshman cornerback Henre' Toliver returned after missing the previous two games because of a back injury, but sophomore D.J. Dean made his third consecutive start in Toliver's place. Toliver played off the bench.

Skipper flagged

Razorbacks sophomore offensive tackle Dan Skipper was called for a personal foul penalty for the fourth time this season. The call on Skipper came in the third quarter and pushed Arkansas back to a second and 22 at its 28.

Brandon Allen completed passes for gains of 17 yards to Jeremy Sprinkle and 29 yards to Hunter Henry before the drive stalled and Arkansas punted.

Big for recruiting

Arkansas has six players from Louisiana and hopes to add more.

The Razorbacks often are competing with LSU for players from Louisiana, which adds significance to what happens on the field when Arkansas plays the Tigers.

"This battle doesn't only happen on the field, it happens during recruiting," Arkansas receivers coach Michael Smith, who recruits Louisiana, said earlier this week. "This game could be huge for us with the kids from down there."

Not interim

Bret Bielema is the first Arkansas coach to face LSU in a game in Fayetteville who didn't have "interim" attached to his title.

In the Tigers' previous two visits to Razorback Stadium, Arkansas had interim coaches with Joe Kines in 1992 and John L. Smith in 2012.

Kines' Razorbacks beat LSU 30-6 while the Tigers beat Smith's team 20-13. It was the final games for Kines and Smith as Arkansas' head coach, but Kines returned to the team in 1993 as Danny Ford's defensive coordinator.

Kines is now retired and living in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Smith is head coach at Fort Lewis College, an NCAA Division II school in Durango, Colo.

Scoreless half

Arkansas became the first team to hold LSU scoreless in the first half when the Razorbacks led the Tigers 10-0 at halftime. LSU's previous low for the first half was three points against Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

In a rush

When Arkansas junior tailback Jonathan Williams dove into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown with 8:40 left in the second quarter, it marked the 14th consecutive game in which the Razorbacks have had a rushing touchdown.

Dad a fan now

Arkansas freshman receiver Jared Cornelius, from Shreveport Evangel Christian Academy, grew up an LSU fan. His father, Shannon, played at LSU and Louisiana Tech.

LSU recruited Jared Cornelius, but he decided to sign with Arkansas so he and Evangel Christian defensive back Santo Ramirez, who also signed with the Razorbacks, could play for the same college team.

"Of course, my dad wanted me to go to LSU at first, but he's an Arkansas fan now," Cornelius said. "He's bleeding Razorback red."

Night moves

Saturday marked the Tigers' 11th consecutive night game this season, and LSU will finish the regular season against Texas A&M with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on Thanksgiving.

Changing of guard

LSU senior Evan Washington made his first start of the season at left guard. He replaced junior Vadal Alexander, a two-year starter who didn't make the trip because of a hand injury.

G'day, mate

Arkansas and LSU both have punters from Australia. Razorbacks senior Sam Irwin-Hill is from Bendigo. Tigers junior Jamie Keehn is from Queensland.

All red

Arkansas wore all red uniforms for the first time this season. The Razorbacks previously had worn the traditional look of red jerseys and helmets with white pants, while wearing all white uniforms and helmets on the road.
