High-flying Qualls strikes at end again

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas forward Michael Qualls did it again -- this time to some of his own teammates.

Qualls, the Razorbacks' 6-6 junior, had a stickback dunk with 0.5 seconds left off a missed shot by Ky Madden to lift the Red team to a 99-98 victory over the White team Wednesday night in Arkansas' Red-White game before an announced crowd of 3,500 at Walton Arena.

Last season Qualls had stickback dunk with 0.2 seconds left in overtime -- off a missed shot by Madden -- to give Arkansas an 87-85 victory over Kentucky.

After Qualls' dunk Wednesday night, Alandise Harris' inbounds pass hit the scoreboard hanging over midcourt and bounced away. Kentucky's Aaron Harrison's inbounds pass after Qualls' dunk landed in the scoreboard -- where it remains.

"A lot of flashbacks," Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson said. "The difference was the ball didn't get stuck up in the scoreboard, it just hit the scoreboard.

"It was kind of weird."

One other difference was that Qualls' dunk Wednesday night came on the goal on the west side of the arena while his dunk against Kentucky came on the east side.

"I just crashed the boards at the end," Qualls said. "I was just trying to test my luck and get another one."

Jacorey Williams appeared to have been the player for the White team who should have blocked out Qualls.

"It was exciting for the fans, but from a coaching standpoint, who was the guy that was supposed to box him out?" Anderson said. "So it's a teaching point to me.

"We made Ky take a difficult shot, and somebody went to sleep. Just like it happened for us, it can happen against us."

Sophomore forward Bobby Portis, playing for the White team, said he wasn't able to move into position to stop Qualls from dunking.

"I saw Ky shoot the ball, and I already knew what was going to happen," Portis said. "I couldn't get there quick enough."

Qualls' dunk capped a big rally by the Red team, which trailed by 20 points in the first half and by 10 points with 4:38 to play.

"You've got to give the Red team kudos because they had a chance to kind of quit," Anderson said. "They were down 20, but with the way we play, you're never out of a game."

Qualls led the Red team with 21 points -- after having two points in the first half -- and eight rebounds. Sophomore center Moses Kingsley and freshman guard Anton Beard had 18 points each. Madden, a senior guard, had 17 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds.

"Our team fought back hard," Qualls said. "We were behind -- deep -- and it showed a lot of camaraderie to come back."

Portis, a sophomore forward and preseason All-SEC first-team pick, led the White team with 28 points and 14 rebounds in 36 minutes. He had 19 points and 10 rebounds going into halftime.

"I thought Bobby played well," Anderson said. "His first half was unbelievable. Then I thought he wore down, but he's been playing at a high level ever since we started practice."

Williams, a junior forward, added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the White team. Junior college transfer guard Jabril Durham had 15 points and Harris, a senior forward, had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Junior guard Dusty Hannahs, a transfer from Texas Tech who is redshirting this season, had 12 points.

"It was an entertaining Red-White game," Anderson said. "It was amazing how it went. It's been the storyline of our practices. They've been so competitive.

"We've still got a lot do, especially defensively, but the players had a lot of fun. They were excited to play in front of our fans and showcase some of the new parts we've got and some maturity the guys have in their game."
