Bentonville's Mahone has Hogs' attention

STAFF PHOTO BEN GOFF -- 11/29/13 -- Conway wide receiver Matthew Cummins drops a pass under pressure from Bentonville defensive back Tyrone Mahone during the third quarter of the 7A playoffs game in Bentonville's Tiger Stadium on Friday November 29, 2013.

Bentonville junior Tyrone Mahone has the skill set needed to be a major college prospect at cornerback.

Mahone, 6-0, 175, 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash, shined at Arkansas’ Elite Camp in June and helped his stock with the coaching staff and has a good chance of receiving an offer from the Hogs at some point. Video highlights CLICK HERE

“I think number one is he can run,” said Bentonville Coach Barry Lunney Sr. “He can really pick ’em up and put ’em down. He has a great speed.”

Junior cornerback Tyrone Mahone of Bentonville impressed Arkansas during a June camp.

He was named to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Super Sophomore team last year after having 46 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and 2 interceptions.

Mahone recorded a tackle, 3 pass breakups along with a 6 yard run and 20 yard reception in the first half of the 17-16 loss to Kansas City Rockhurst on Friday. He missed the second half because of cramping.

“He has good acceleration, his first two to three steps he’s right at full speed,” Lunney Sr. said. “He has long arms. He just has a good understanding of the game. He really loves it.”

Mahone, who is also drawing interest from Nebraska, Navy and others, had times of 11.19 seconds in the 100 meters, 22.40 in the 200 and 50.6 in the 400 during the spring.

He was one of about 25 prospects to attend Arkansas’ game against Nicholls State on unofficial visits. He enjoyed interacting with his lead recruiter and tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr. and defensive backs coach Clay Jennings.

“He’s not all interested about football,” said Mahone of Jennings. “He was asking about my family as well. He told me he wanted to see me on the high side of 175 pounds.”
