Arkansas 49, Texas Tech 28

Game Sketch

Arkansas linebacker Martrell Spaight returns an interception during the second quarter of a game Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.

Why Arkansas won

The Razorbacks stuck to their bread and butter. Arkansas ran 68 times and passed only 12 times as it dominated the line of scrimmage. The Razorbacks' defense also made some big plays, including three forced turnovers.

Why Texas Tech lost

The Red Raiders were undisciplined. Three personal fouls aided Arkansas scoring drives in the first half and Texas Tech's rush defense was poor. Two first half turnovers in their own territory also led to Arkansas touchdowns.

Offensive Player of the Game

Alex Collins rushed 27 times for a career-high 212 yards and 2 touchdowns. Collins' 84-yard run in the fourth quarter broke the game open.

Defensive Player of the Game

Brooks Ellis recorded 8 tackles and broke up 4 passes. The sophomore linebacker also forced a fumble that led to the Razorbacks' first touchdown and had a tackle for loss.

Play of the Game

Arkansas linebacker Martrell Spaight intercepted Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb and returned the ball 30 yards to the Red Raiders 12-yard line with 1:36 before halftime. The Razorbacks scored one play later on a touchdown run by Jonathan Williams to take a 28-21 lead.

The interception came three plays after an Arkansas turnover ended a drive in the Texas Tech red zone.

Old Foes

Saturday's game was the first time Arkansas and Texas Tech have played since the Razorbacks' last season in the Southwest Conference.

Arkansas has now won 29 of 36 games between the programs. They are scheduled to meet next September in Fayetteville.

Since leaving for the Southeastern Conference in 1992, the Razorbacks have played 18 games against former SWC teams, winning 10 times. In addition to the Texas Tech game next year, Arkansas has future games scheduled against former SWC teams TCU in 2016 and 2017, and Texas in 2021.

The Razorbacks also play Texas A&M each year in conference play. That game, known as the Southwest Classic, is scheduled to be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas through the 2024 season.

Run, Run, Run

Arkansas rushed for 438 yards and 7 touchdowns Saturday on 68 carries.

The Razorbacks were most effective running the ball after halftime, rushing 40 times for 286 yards. The power run game helped Arkansas control time of possession, holding the ball for 23 minutes, 55 seconds in the second half.

Black and White

Arkansas won its first game wearing white helmets since 1951. The Razorbacks were previously 0-5 wearing the helmets since re-introducing them in 2012.

Texas Tech wore 1990s era throwback jerseys Saturday. The home fans wore all black.
