Verizon not friendly to shooters

Arkansas guard Anthlon Bell (5) takes a shot over Indiana State guard Jake Odum during the first half Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville.

Arkansas' hot-shooting duo of Anthlon Bell and Dusty Hannahs will have its toughest challenge of the season Saturday.

That's saying something considering the SEC's best three-point shooting tandem has already faced the nation's second best three-point defense.

However, Verizon Arena traditionally causes problems for the Razorbacks' sharp-shooters.

Since Arkansas began playing there in 1999, it has made just 29.7 percent of its three-point shots.

That's 7.3 percentage points lower than the Hogs have shot against non-conference opponents at Bud Walton Arena during that same time span, according to HogStats.com.

Bell doesn't look too much into those numbers, though.

"I feel like if you're a shooter, all you need is a ball and rim," Bell said. "It should feel the same."

His performance in last year's game at Verizon Arena seems to back that up. He made 3 of his 6 attempts from three-point range.

It will be Hannahs' first game in North Little Rock with the Razorbacks.

Throw in the fact that Mercer is holding opponents to 31.7 percent beyond the arc, which ranks just outside the top 100, and it should be a tough matchup for Arkansas.

Akron - which visited Arkansas in November - is holding its opponents to 23.3 percent, the second best three-point defense in the country.

The Zips held the Razorbacks to their lowest three-point shooting percentage (30 percent) at home this season and handed Arkansas its first loss, 88-80.

Arkansas must have a better performance - despite Mercer's defense and the venue - to avoid another loss to a mid-major opponent.

The Razorbacks and Bears tip off at 7 p.m. Saturday.
