SEMO outlasts Arkansas

Arkansas' Clark Eagan gets caught at second by Southeast Missouri State University's Branden Boggetto March 18, 2015.

— It was a long day at Baum Stadium.

Andrew Benintendi's called third strike ended the 4-hour, 28-minute marathon, giving Southeast Missouri a 12-11 win Wednesday.

A pair of throwing errors by Arkansas in the eighth inning led to two runs for the Redhawks, breaking a 10-10 tie.

Game Sketch

Line: SEMO 12-14-3; Arkansas 11-12-2

Records: SEMO 10-9; Arkansas 10-9

WP: Greg Mosel (1-1)

LP: Lance Phillips (0-1)

Turning Point: With the game tied 10-10 in the top of the eighth, Arkansas committed two throwing errors, allowing the Redhawks to score two runs. That proved to be the difference in the game.

Attendance: 477

It was a fitting way for Southeast Missouri (10-9) to take the lead, as both teams struggled the entire game. In a back-and-forth affair, the Razorbacks and Redhawks used a combined 12 pitchers that allowed 26 hits and 16 walks.

Arkansas (10-9) had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the eighth inning, but Michael Bernal struck out to leave the bases loaded. In the bottom of the ninth, Joe Serrano hit a deep fly ball to left, but the left fielder was able to catch it just in front of the wall.

However, it was Bernal that gave the Razorbacks their last lead.

After the Redhawks scored four runs in the top of the fourth, Bernal led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. He also added an RBI-single in the fifth that extended the lead to 7-5 before Clark Eagan's sacrifice fly made it 8-5.

The Razorbacks gave it right back to Southeast Missouri, though, scoring four runs in the sixth. A solo home run by Clayton Evans gave the Redhawks a 10-8 lead.

An RBI-double by Alex Gosser and a throwing error by Southeast Missouri allowed Arkansas to tie it up again, but the two Arkansas errors the next inning proved to be too much for the Razorbacks to overcome.

Arkansas opens its SEC home schedule Thursday with a game against No. 1 LSU. First pitch is scheduled for 6:03 p.m.
