Arkansas' academics helps seal the deal with commitment

Festus (Mo.) Jefferson offensive lineman Shane Clenin, who committed to Arkansas on Saturday, April 16, 2016, poses with Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema.

When Arkansas offensive line commitment Shane Clenin talks about the importance of academics, it's not lip service.

Clenin, who has a 3.93 grade point average and plans to major in civil engineering, was excited about the scholarship offer he received from the Hogs on March 31, but wanted to check out the engineering department.

He was able to do that during his latest visit last week.

"We went to engineering building and we went to look at some labs and I saw and a feel for what it would be like a student in engineering and how the program was set up,” Clenin said.

Clenin, 6-6, 287 pounds, of Festus (Mo.) Jefferson chose Arkansas over scholarship offers from Northwestern, Iowa State, New Mexico, Colorado State, Illinois State and others.

“I felt at home because the coaching staff is phenomenal,” Clenin said. “They really take pride in making you feel good and they’re really honest with you. They feel more like parents than coaches. The players are awesome. They’re all very kind and helpful and willing to answer all of your questions and the atmosphere is just phenomenal.”

Being able to talk to the players also helped convince him Arkansas was the place for him.

“They kind of told me how practice was a going to work and how it was to be a Razorback and as a student-athlete,” Clenin said. “They kind of told me that it was a great place to be and they really drive to make you the best player you can be.”
