Observations from Arkansas' first fall scrimmage

Arkansas running back Devwah Whaley goes through practice Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, in Fayetteville.

— Observations from Arkansas' first full fall scrimmage Saturday.

— The entire scrimmage matched first-team offense vs. first-team defense, second-team vs second-team and reserves vs. reserves.

— Arkansas had a new-look first-team offensive line and it looked markedly better than the version the Hogs went with Thursday, with the caveat that Bret Bielema asked Robb Smith not to dial up a bunch of pressure. Jake Raulerson replaced Brian Wallace at right tackle. Zach Rogers continued working at right guard with Frank Ragnow at center, Hjalte Froholdt at left guard and Dan Skipper at left tackle. Raulerson wasn’t perfect, but provided much more stability on the right side of the line. Will be interesting to see if this is the first five they go with moving forward. I’d think so. Bielema did mention Jalen Merrick as in the mix at right tackle and said Skipper could flip back and forth.

— The offense moved Austin Allen around a lot, helping stymie the rush. He threw the ball really well on the move and finished 14 of 19 for 151 yards. He looked calm and in control and made some nice throws across his body on the move.

— Devwah Whaley looked like a star in the making. He finished with a team-best 96 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, with four runs of 10 or more yards, easily the most on the team. His long run of the day was a beauty, a 25-yarder with the starters. He took the handoff, make a quick cut to daylight and ran through multiple arm tackles while showing a nice burst. He had a run of 21 yards against the second-team defense. He broke three tackles on an 11-yard touchdown run with the first-team, delivered a blow to De’Andre Coley to finish off a 13-yard run and had a big collision with Santos Ramirez on an 11-yard scamper.

— Ramirez had a nice day. Several physical hits and generally around the football.

— Rawleigh Williams looked really good. He finished with 67 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Ran with the same great vision and made some of those same great cuts. Had great pad level. Took a few good pops without showing any ill effects.

— McTelvin Agim worked with the second-team defenes behind Karl Roesler.

— Based on the scrimmage, Ty Storey looks like he has the edge on the backup QB job. Dan Enos said the spot was very open earlier in the week, but Storey outperformed Rafe Peavey on Saturday. Looked a lot more comfortable. Bielema praised Storey and said Peavey may not be 100 percent yet after his back surgery.

— Cole Kelley has a huge arm. He may project as the second-best quarterback on the roster, behind Allen. I'm not the first person to say this, but he really looks like Ryan Mallett wearing No. 15. He made a handful of throws deep downfield look easy. That said, his 68-yard touchdown pass to reserve Cameron Colbert was the result of a complete coverage bust. Still, an impressive day. Harnessing his arm strength is a work in progress. He gave a receiver no chance when he rifled a close-range quick slant to him.

— Ricky Town is very clearly the No. 5 quarterback on the depth chart. He didn’t take any reps with even the second-team, only working with the reserves.

— Randy Ramsey had three nice sacks with the second-team defense. At least one came against Brian Wallace. Wallace and Colton Jackson continued to struggle while largely working with the second-team offensive line.

— Jeremiah Ledbetter was active. Bielema compared him to Darius Philon.

— Redshirt freshman Will Gragg had a nice run after a catch for a 31-yard gain with the second-team offense, but he doesn’t appear to be one of the Hogs’ top four tight ends at the moment. Behind Jeremy Sprinkle, Austin Cantrell, Anthony Antwine and Jack Kraus got the majority of the reps.

— Kofi Boating was on crutches watching from the sideline. Bielema confirmed he tore his ACL running a route in a Friday night practice.

— T.J. Hammonds headed to the training room after tweaking his knee before the scrimmage started and didn't return. Bielema said it wasn’t serious.

— Dominique Reed left practice early after rolling his ankle. He limped slightly but walked off the field under his own power to the training room. Not serious.

— Tevin Beanum was watching from the stands. Sounds like he'll rejoin the team when school starts Aug. 22, barring an injury that paves the way for him to be added to the 105-man roster.

— Connor Limpert may have a chance at winning the kickoff job. He and Adam McFain have the best legs on the team. Limpert routinely boomed kickoffs deep into the end zone, with a wind at his back. McFain hit a few deep, too, while the rest of the kickers either couldn't get it to the end zone or just barely did.
