Anderson finishes coaching staff redo

Scotty Thurman, director of student-athlete development, speaks with guard Jabril Durham before playing North Florida Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, in Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson's basketball staff is remaining intact, but jobs are being shuffled among Scotty Thurman, Matt Zimmerman and Jeff Daniels.

Thurman, 41, will be a full-time assistant coach, Anderson announced Wednesday, a move the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported April 15.

Thurman has been on the road recruiting the past few weeks.

Zimmerman is moving from an assistant coaching position to become director of basketball operations to replace Daniels, who is taking over Thurman's previous job as director of student-athlete development.

Melvin Watkins and T.J. Cleveland will remain full-time assistant coaches.

The staff moves come after the Razorbacks finished 16-16 in Anderson's fifth season at Arkansas and missed the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time.

"This is an opportunity for us to take full advantage of the strengths we have within our staff and restructure some duties," Anderson said in a news release. "We have talented individuals within our program and I'm looking forward to maximizing their potential moving forward."

Thurman, a three-time All-SEC forward who played on Arkansas' 1994 national championship and 1995 national runner-up teams, has been the Razorbacks' director of student-athlete development for six years. He originally was hired by John Pelphrey, Anderson's predecessor as Arkansas' coach who is now an assistant at Alabama.

The past two seasons Thurman also served as the color analyst on Arkansas' radio broadcasts. There has been no announcement from Arkansas about who will replace Thurman there.

Thurman ranks 10th on the UA's all-time scoring list with 1,650 points from 1993-1995. He is best remembered for his three-pointer with less than a minute left to help seal the Razorbacks' 76-72 victory over Duke in the 1994 NCAA Tournament title game in Charlotte, N.C.

Zimmerman, an Arkansas graduate, has been an assistant coach for Anderson the previous 14 years at Alabama-Birmingham, Missouri and Arkansas. He will now oversee day-to-day operations of the program, including the budget, travel, and summer camps and be involved with on-campus recruiting visits.

Daniels has worked for Anderson for 10 years at Missouri and Arkansas as director of operations. His new job will involve coordinating programs to help personal and career development of the players and organizing community service projects for their participation.

Watkins, a former head coach at North Carolina-Charlotte and Texas A&M, has been an assistant for Anderson for 10 seasons.

Cleveland, who played at Arkansas and is Anderson's nephew, has been on Anderson's staff for 14 seasons.
