Arkansas' Fassi makes LPGA tournament

Maria Fassi practices on the driving range before her round on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Lost Springs Golf Course in Rogers during the American Junior Golf Association KPMG Stacy Lewis Junior Open.

— Arkansas freshman Maria Fassi earned the sponsor’s exemption Thursday into the LPGA’s Northwest Arkansas Championship on June 20-26 at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers.

Fassi’s 72.56 stroke average earned her the exemption as the top-ranked Razorback player. Sophomore Alana Uriell and senior Regina Plasencia were second and third in scoring average, giving them the opportunity to play in the tournament’s Monday qualifier.

Fassi, a Pachuca, Mexico, native, became the first Arkansas women’s player to open her career with a victory when she won the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. She was the low finisher in five of six events with four top-10 showings this season. Fassi was a member of the All-SEC second-team and was on the SEC All-Freshman team this year.
