Staff Picks: Arkansas at Ole Miss

Neither team gets much pressure from the defensive front, but Arkansas should be more hungry for a victory. Ole Miss is not nearly as good as the teams the Hogs have been seeing. If there is going to be a second-half push, it will start here.

Every game is a bowl game for the Rebels and most of the folks in The Grove will actually go to the game for at least a half. The Razorbacks need a conference win to kick start the program down the critical stretch.

This game could determine who avoids a last-place finish in the SEC West. The pressure of going winless in conference play would intensify with an Arkansas loss, but the Razorbacks somehow maintain their Ole Miss mastery.

The Razorbacks have had great success against the Rebels since head coach Bret Bielema arrived. But it’s hard to come up with a case for a win here.

Ole Miss 35-24

Harry King

Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson is out for the year with a knee injury suffered against LSU, a development that should help the Razorbacks record their first SEC victory.

Arkansas 28-24

Bo Mattingly

Ole Miss is last in the league at stopping the run and near the bottom in sacks, which gives Arkansas a chance. The Rebels lead the league in passing, but QB Shea Patterson suffered a season-ending knee injury last week. While the Hogs have QB problems of their own, this is a great chance to snap a seven-game losing streak against Power 5 teams.

Arkansas 27-21

Bart Pohlman

Even without Shea Patterson, Ole Miss will be able to move the ball against the Arkansas defense. The Hogs struggle against mobile quarterbacks and Ole Miss backup Jordan Ta’amu fits that bill. The Hogs may end their streak of allowing 40 points in four straight SEC games, but their losing streak won’t end.

Ole Miss 35-34

Matt Jones

If Austin Allen returns, the Razorbacks should be able to snap that Power 5 losing streak against a team with a backup QB and an interim coach. If he doesn’t, it’s a toss-up.

Arkansas 28-27

Tommy Craft

There are more questions than answers for the Hogs. Ole Miss has questions, too. Who will play quarterback for either team? How big of a difference would Austin Allen make with a team that is giving up 40 points a game.

Ole Miss 42-28

Chip Souza

The Hogs can snap their recent slide with a win here, but it won’t be easy. Both teams have struggled, but Arkansas pulls this one out.
