Whaley doubtful for Southwest Classic

Arkansas running back Devwah Whaley carries the ball during a game against Colorado State on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, in Fort Collins, Colo.

It looks unlikely Arkansas' leading rusher will play this week after taking a big hit during the Razorbacks' game against Auburn.

Devwah Whaley (concussion) is "very doubtful" to play in the Southwest Classic, Arkansas coach Chad Morris said Wednesday. Asked on Monday whether the junior running back was in concussion protocol, Morris did not confirm or deny, stating only that he would be able to talk more about the injury later in the week.

Whaley was injured during the third quarter of the Razorbacks' 34-3 loss to the Tigers on Saturday. He was hit almost immediately after taking a pitch from quarterback Ty Storey, and slammed to the ground by Auburn cornerback Jamel Dean.

He did not return to the game.

Whaley has rushed for 205 yards on 45 carries this season, and has scored two touchdowns. No other Arkansas back has more than 91 rushing yards.

If Whaley is unable to play, he would be one of at least four players who would be ruled out for Saturday's game against Texas A&M. Receiver Gary Cross and cornerback Britto Tutt have been ruled out for the game with undisclosed injuries.

Cornerback Chevin Calloway will miss his third game with what has been described multiple times as a personal issue.

Arkansas is expected to get receiver De'Vion Warren and running back T.J. Hammonds back for the Texas A&M game after neither traveled to the Auburn game. Warren is the Razorbacks' starting kickoff returner.

Receiver La'Michael Pettway, held without a catch at Auburn, and offensive lineman Noah Gatlin wore limited-contact green jerseys at Tuesday's practice. Morris said they will practice on Wednesday.
