Razorbacks Roundtable: Special teams

Arkansas kicker Connor Limpert attempts a field goal during a game against Vanderbilt on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, in Fayetteville.

True or false: Arkansas returns a kickoff or punt for a touchdown.

Dudley Dawson: True. The Razorbacks are due and have plenty of elusive newcomers.

Tom Murphy: True. In the opener vs. Portland State. Deon Stewart. 67-yard punt return.

Scottie Bordelon: I'm going to say false on a punt return for a score. Arkansas, unbelievably, hasn't scored in that area of special teams since the 2011 season. If the Razorbacks can find a consistent threat back there then that could certainly help with the field position battle they often lost last season. I believe someone will take a kickoff to the house in one of the nonconference games and I would bet it is De'Vion Warren.

Seth Campbell: True. Speed is never more apparent than in special teams. The Razorbacks have some young guys that can fly, and kickoff and punt return is a great place for guys who are young to get some playing time. De'Vion Warren has also shown he can return a kickoff for a touchdown when he did it against Auburn two years ago. The speed and experience has me thinking the Hogs will get at least one return for a touchdown this year.

Q: Over or under 1.5 kickoff return touchdowns for Arkansas opponents?

Dudley Dawson: Being in the SEC, I'll say two and take the over.

Tom Murphy: Under.

Scottie Bordelon: I'm going to take the over, too. I think Arkansas will give up two this season, one against Ole Miss in Week 2 and one at Alabama.

Seth Campbell: Over. If the Hogs kick the ball into the end zone more then maybe they could hit the under. After multiple years of seeing kickoffs fall short of the goal line, though, I'll have to see it to believe it.

Q: On a scale of 1-10, how confident are you in Connor Limpert?

Dudley Dawson: 9.99. The guy has been outstanding and is vastly underrated by his own fans.

Tom Murphy: 8.4. My handy calculator tells me he made 19 of 24 field goal attempts last year (.7916), so I'm giving him 5 percentage points of improvement. I think Barry Lunney would jump all over that.

Scottie Bordelon: 8.5-9. Limpert is nearly automatic from inside 50 yards, and he even said in Matt's profile this summer he's confident from 65 inside Razorback Stadium. He's a weapon and could be the difference in a game or two this fall. He would have to miss 3-4 kicks in a row for me to lose confidence in him.

Seth Campbell: 9 when he's kicking field goals. Limpert was good on 19 of 24 field goal attempts last year and a perfect 29 for 29 on extra points. He hit two field goals last year over 50 yards, including a 55 yarder that was the seventh longest in school history. He has earned my confidence. Now, kickoffs? That is a different story.

Q: What are your thoughts on Arkansas' punting situation? Reid Bauer is back, and the Razorbacks added Sam Loy, a transfer from Colorado, this offseason.

Dudley Dawson: Looking at Loy's numbers from his two years at Vanderbilt and some monster punts he got off, I'll take him as the punter. If not, he will have pushed Bauer to be better, which leads to good competition either way.

Tom Murphy: No flipping idea here yet until we see them in camp. Loy could win the job. Bottom line, punting and every other aspect of special teams must be markedly better. Last year was a borderline punting disaster and the overall kicking game disparity in the stretch of games against Colorado State, North Texas, Auburn and Texas A&M was just painful.

Scottie Bordelon: According to cfbstats.com, Bauer averaged less than 39 yards per punt in 2018, which ranked 95th out of 100 punters who played in 75 percent of his team's games and had a minimum of 3.6 punts per game played. I think Loy can definitely better those numbers, but Bauer is going to get a shot to prove he's taken a step forward in fall practices. It's one of the more important position battles this month. Arkansas badly needs stability here.

Seth Campbell: This has to be Loy's job to lose. He wouldn't have come to Arkansas if he didn't believe he could play. He was a second-team All-SEC selection his freshman year at Vanderbilt, and I expect him to be the punter the entire season.
