FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas will reportedly hire Kolby Smith as its running backs coach.

Brandon Marcello of 247Sports first reported the move Saturday, one day after Jimmy Smith resigned the position with the Razorbacks to reportedly take a job at TCU.

Kolby Smith, 39, played for Arkansas offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino at Louisville from 2003-06 on teams that had a combined 41-9 record. Smith rushed for 697 yards, averaged 5.5 yards per carry and scored 5 touchdowns as a senior on the Cardinals’ Big East championship team.

Smith came to Arkansas to work for Petrino as a graduate assistant in 2012. He followed Petrino to Western Kentucky in 2013 and Louisville from 2014-18 as running backs coach.

He coached running backs at Rutgers in 2019.

Smith worked the past four seasons in multiple roles with the Miami Dolphins, first as an offensive quality control coach, then as an offensive assistant. NFL Network reported in January that Smith had parted ways with the Dolphins.

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Smith in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He played in 27 games and scored 3 touchdowns in Kansas City from 2007-09.
