What Sam Pittman said recapping Georgia Southern game, looking ahead to Texas A&M

Arkansas coach Sam Pittman (right) is shown during a game against Georgia Southern on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021, in Fayetteville.

• Sam Pittman said he has had respected Texas A&M's program for a long time and that he has several friends on staff there.

• Pittman called the Aggies' defense "smothering" at all levels. The offense is "loaded with skill players," and references Isaiah Spiller by name.

• Pittman said the rivalry hasn't really been a rivalry for the last nine years. He said both teams have to win to make it a rivalry. He noted he was on a few staffs that lost to the Aggies.

• Pittman said Texas A&M quarterback Zach Calzada seemed to have more confidence against New Mexico than he did a week earlier at Colorado. "I think he's a fine quarterback. He wouldn't be there if he wasn't."

• Pittman said Texas A&M does a good job on its third-down defense. He says it will be important for the Razorbacks to be sharp on first and second downs.

• Pittman said Tyson Morris is a much better player this year. "Because he's playing better, he's playing more confident." Pittman said Morris has made "some really hard catches" and has become a better leader away from the field.

• On Dominique Johnson, Pittman said he will earn more carries if he continues to run as well as he has the past two weeks. He said Johnson proved he was too valuable to move after a brief change to tight end during the preseason.

• Pittman said Hudson Henry rolled his ankle early next week, but came back on Thursday of game week. Pittman said if a player doesn't practice during game week, it is unlikely they will play.

• Pittman said neither Ricky Stromberg nor Dalton Wagner will practice today. He said they will prepare as if neither will play vs. Texas A&M, but is hopeful to know more about their status Wednesday.

• Pittman said Ty Clary practices at three different offensive line positions. Clary played center, guard and tackle during the Georgia Southern game. "He is extremely valuable to our football team....To do what he did was really remarkable."

• Pittman said the defense must know where tight end Jalen Wydermyer is. He said Wydermyer hurt Arkansas during last season's game in College Station.

• Pittman said that if Stromberg and Wagner can't play, the second half against Georgia Southern was beneficial to allow that offensive line combination game time playing with each other.

• Pittman was asked what has stood out through the first quarter of the season and he mentioned how hard the team has played. He said he was concerned about special teams going into the season. He said that unit did not play well against Rice, but has played much better the last two games. He also said he likes the play of quarterback, both KJ Jefferson and Malik Hornsby.

• Pittman said he doesn't "feel great about" the situation that forced Arkansas to go to College Station last year, but having to return to Arlington this year. He notes that Arkansas will only be able to play once at home through the end of October. "Would I rather have them in here? Yes."

• Pittman was asked if Jimbo Fisher tried to hire him at Texas A&M and sidestepped the question. When pressed he said, "If I wanted to tell you, I would, but I don't."

• Pittman said Trelon Smith is beat up with different injuries, including his toe, but is playing hard. "I don't think he's been healthy yet. He is an inspiring guy in that room and on our team. We need him to get healthy."

• Pittman said Myles Slusher has been injured with a hamstring or quad. He said he is beginning to get healthy and he is hopeful it will stay that way.
