Greenbrier pitcher commits to Razorbacks

— Arkansas’ baseball team added its fourth commitment in three days Wednesday.

Greenbrier left-handed pitcher Jordan Huskey committed to the Razorbacks during the same phone call he received an offer from Arkansas pitching coach Matt Hobbs. Huskey (5-11, 175 pounds) is a rising junior in the class of 2022.

“We used to live up in Bentonville and used to always go to the Razorback games,” Huskey said. “It was a great experience being around the fans and everything, and Coach (Dave) Van Horn is a great coach.

“It’s just a great thing to finally be able to go to your dream school. It’s such a relieving feeling. Now I’ve got to keep working harder so I can play when I get there.”

Huskey has also been recruited by North Carolina, Oklahoma, Arkansas-Little Rock and College of Charleston. He plays travel baseball for the Arkansas Sticks.

While pitching in relief for the Sticks last weekend in Emerson, Ga., Huskey’s fastball was clocked at 84-87 mph, and touched 88. He previously had been clocked in the 82-84 mph range.

“He's a warrior and he’s always been a winner,” Sticks coach Chase Brewster said. “Since he was 13 he’s been one of the best arms in the state. He’s competed and he’s probably won every big game he’s ever pitched. He’s always been the guy you want to give the ball to. It was just a matter of how hard he was going to throw. We’re happy he made that jump in velocity.”

Huskey throws a fastball, curveball, slider and changeup. Brewster said he was worked recently on a cutter.

“It’s kind of become his new out pitch, especially now that he’s added velocity,” Brewster said. “It’s going to help take him to the next level.”

Huskey transferred to Greenbrier prior to his sophomore year. He played as a freshman at Benton.

He is the third Greenbrier player to commit to Arkansas in the past four years, joining pitcher Hunter Milligan and third baseman Cayden Wallace.

“Greenbrier does a really good job and (Coach) Chad Cope always has the kids ready,” Brewster said.

Huskey is the ninth player to commit to the Razorbacks’ 2022 recruiting class, and the fifth from the state of Arkansas. Other Arkansans to commit to the Razorbacks in the class are Springdale Har-Ber outfielder Cooper Dossett, Russellville third baseman Colton Sims, South Side Bee Branch shortstop Easton Swofford and El Dorado right-handed pitcher Austin Jobe.

Verbal commitments are not binding.
