Corey Williams expected to take assistant position at Texas Tech

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas assistant basketball coach Corey Williams is expected to leave the program after two seasons.

Williams, the first on-court assistant coach hired to Arkansas coach Eric Musselman's first staff in 2019, is expected to take a similar position at Texas Tech under recently hired coach Mark Adams.

Musselman confirmed to reporters Wednesday that Williams had spoken to him about another job opportunity, but did not specify where.

"We anticipate him taking another job," Musselman said. "Corey is incredible. Sometimes new opportunities arise, and you look at that as a new challenge. We would anticipate him taking another job, and we’re going to miss him because he was a big-time part of our family, for sure."

College basketball reporter Jeff Goodman reported Williams would accept a position at Texas Tech under Adams, who replaced Chris Beard as the Red Raiders' head coach earlier this month.

Williams was previously a head coach at Stetson for six seasons. Prior to his tenure with the Hatters, Williams served as a student assistant at Oklahoma State from 1993-94, was an assistant coach at Oral Roberts from 2000-07 and a Florida State assistant coach from 2007-13 under Leonard Hamilton, who recruited him to play at Oklahoma State.

Williams, a native of Macon, Ga., played point guard at Oklahoma State under Hamilton and Eddie Sutton from 1988-92. By the end of his college career, he ranked eighth on the school’s career scoring list with 1,320 points and led the Cowboys to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances under Sutton in 1991 and 1992.

In Lubbock, Williams will be reunited with Sean Sutton, his former Oklahoma State teammate. Sean Sutton serves in an advisory role at Texas Tech.
